With the success of Superman, a big budget BATMAN movie was discussed. The first draft came in on April 17th, 1982. The draft contained both Batman and Robin's origin, Commissioner and Barbara Gordon, with the Joker, Penguin and Rubert Thorn as the villains. In the second draft, dated January 10th, 1984, the Penguin and Barbara Gordon had been dropped. On October 21st, 1985 Tim Burton turned in his treatment for HIS Batman. Burton was the one that established that the Joker killed the Wayne’s. Burton also had the Penguin, Riddler and Catwoman as Jokers henchpeople. They were the ones, in Burton’s draft, that murdered the Grayson's. As the final script came near, all of the villains except for the Joker had been cut out. Vicki Vale was now in the movie, Robin’s origin was included, as well as a scene where Batman gallops to battle on a powerful horse.
It was finally time to film. The cast was in place. Micheal Keaton, Billy Dee Williams, Jack Palance, Jack Nicolson, and Sean Young. Sean was cast as Vicki Vale, but while shooting, she fell off a horse and fractured her collarbone. Kim Basinger was brought in at the last minute. Ricky Addison was cast as Robin but Burton ordered that the part be cut.
The origin of Batman is shown in a flashback, which Bruce has during the movie. The familiar story of how his parents were shot down in front of him on the way home from a movie is hauntingly portrayed. The origin of the Joker is part of the storyline, as Batman accidentally drops Jack Napier into a vat of chemicals while trying to apprehend him. The name Jack Napier was given to the Joker, but his true name is not known in the comics. It is also revealed that it was a young Jack Napier/Joker who killed Bruce's parents.
A secondary plot exists between Bruce and Vicki Vale. Vicki finds out that Bruce is Batman and they try to work out a relationship. Jack Nicholson is superb in his role as the Joker. Michael Keaton defined the character of Batman and most people consider him the best out of the three actors that have portrayed the role.
Batman made $40,489,746 in it's opening weekend. The movie ranks as the #1 movie in 1989 making $251,188,924 total for the year. Batman Also ranks as #46 on the Adjusted Gross ranks, making the total come to $359,470,868.
