Bane
DC Superheroes: Mattel, 2005. Series 1, Asst J2003, SKU# J2006
Bane returns. The new DC SuperHeroes series of figures is updating some of previous versions of the comic style Batman figures Mattel has released over the last three years, including a few that were only available overseas.
There is not much new to this Bane from the original. The biggest difference is open hands rather than the fists the original had. Because of the open hands it does not come with the spiked brass knuckle that the original had either. While most Bane figures come with no accessories, a few will have Osito, his teddy bear included with them too.
SPECS:
The figure stands 6 1/2 inches tall and has 21 points of articulation (head, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, boots and ankles). It includes a Detective Comic Book 736, No Man’s Land, “Homecoming”.
PROS:
This is still one of the best Bane figures ever released. There have only been a half dozen or so others with Lethal Impact Bane from 1996’s the Legends of the Dark Knight line is a distant next best.
CONS:
The stance should be a little less open, the legs are spread apart a little too much. Osito should not be a “Chase” figure, although I’ve also read that Osito is a running change, not a Chase. As long as they changed to open hands, they could have included the original fists so you could change them if you wanted.
OVERALL:
The return of the comic style Batman figures was long overdue. For the most part this is just like the Bane that was only released overseas, with only minor changes. Batman along with three villains, Killer Croc, Bane and Scarecrow make up the first assortment, so you stand a better chance at getting one of these at retail than the original. This is a must have figure, if you missed the original here’s your chance to get one.

Batman
DC Superheroes: Mattel, 2005. Asst J2003, SKU# J5151
The comic style Batman is back. Just before Christmas the new DC SuperHeroes line of figures hit the pegs. The first four figures, Batman, Bane, Killer Croc and Scarecrow are re-releases from last wave of Comic Style figures that Mattel released overseas. These figures are similar, but have some new features and are not identical to those. This figure is based on Batsignal Batman one of the Deluxe Figures from Wave 6. The only exceptions are that it was been repainted to blue/gray and does not have the ball jointed head or the cloth cape and there is no Batsignal included with the figure.
Essentially this figure is a cross between Zipline Batman and the SDCC Batman figures that were sculpted by The Four Horsemen, only with slightly better articulation. It has a “Retro Traditional” Gray and Blue look and is similar to the Jim Lee interpretation of Batman.
SPECS:
The figure stands 6.5 inches tall and has 20 points of articulation (head, shoulders, elbows, gloves, wrists, torso, waist, hips, knees and ankles) and the rubber cape that was on the 2004 SDCC “Unmasked Batman. It also includes three accessories, Grapling Gun, Batarang and Batcuffs that came with the 2003 SDCC Batman. It also includes a comic book, Detective Comics 704, “Rocket Scientist”
PROS:
It takes Zipline Batman to a whole new level. A dead on classic Comic Book look and good example that Mattel can compete with Marvel Legends in the articulation department, almost. Not many Batman figures can actually touch the Utility Belt with their hands, this one can. The wash job that covers the body and cape adds a new dimension to detail and is not often seen on Mattel’s mass retail figures.
CONS:
The loss of the ball joint head is sad, because this figure seems to stare downward more than Zipline did. While the rubber cape is fine, the cloth ones are almost always better. Zipline and the others before had slightly softer plastic for the gloves, this figure has very soft rubber gloves and hands. Too soft I think, as the wrists will probably let the hands come off easily during play. Those blue pins in the knees make me wonder where Quality Control was on that one. I also wonder if we will see a running change to gray pins later.
OVERALL:
This is one of the better Batman figures ever released. Added articulation for greater playability makes it a really good value. If you want a figure with more articulation than Zipline Batman, but less than Attack Armor Batman then this is your figure. This figure is a must have for any Batman or action figure collector, and will be even more so if they get rid of those ugly blue pins in the knees.

Killer Croc
DC Superheroes: Mattel, 2005. Asst J2003, SKU# J5147
Killer Croc is back. The new DC SuperHeroes series of figures is updating some of previous versions of the comic style Batman figures Mattel has released over the last three years.
There is a new head sculpt and this version is a lighter green than before. It does not have the torn shirt or the tail that the previous version did either. Unlike before the jaw is fixed and does not open and close like the original.
SPECS:
The figure stands 6 1/4 inches tall and has 10 points of articulation (head, shoulders, wrists, hips, and ankles). It comes with a piece of pipe as an accessory/weapon. It also includes a comic book, Batman Comic Book, Batman: Dark Tomorrow, “Setups”.
PROS:
This is one of the best Killer Croc figures ever released. The new head sculpt is really good and I like that this version does not have the tail. I think that makes it even better than before.
CONS:
Elbows and knees should have been on the figure, Bane has them, Croc should have too.
OVERALL:
The figure has good playability and a really good value. The return of the comic style Batman figures was long overdue. Batman along with three villains, Killer Croc, Bane and Scarecrow make up the first assortment, so you stand a better chance at getting one of these at retail than the original.
