14 year old Virgil Hawkins of Dakota City, still trying to accept the premature death of his mother during the Dakota Riots where she was a paramedic, became briefly associated with a gang to protect himself from a rival gang. When the two gangs faced off in the harbor district, a gas was released. Later, the incident became known as the Big Bang, an isolated experiment engineered by industrialist, Edwin Alva. The gas was a mutagene that awakened the latent metagenes in everyone in the city that had the potential. Hawkins was one of the luckiest of the affected, instead of becoming physically transformed, Hawkins retained his appearance and learned he had electro-magnetic powers. Confiding in his best friend Richie Foley, Hawkins decided to become a super hero to protect his home town from the other metahumans who had turned to crime. Along the way, Hawkins learns more and more about his powers and as well as harsh life lessons.
