When Al Rothstein's mother was pregnant with him, she was exposed to radiation. As an adolescent, Rothstein developed super strength and the ability to manipulate his body size from seven feet to 60. As an adult, Rothstein learned to double his body density to give himself nigh invulnerability as well as the ability to phase through solid objects. Rothstein learned he was the grandson of a super villain from the early 1900's, answering the suppressed rage within him. At times Atom Smasher is unstable but he still strives to prove he is a super hero
