The Huntress and Batman share a common past, children orphaned when their parents were violently killed leading them to take on costumed identities and take justice. However, the Huntress came from a much different background. Helena Bertinelli was born into Gotham City under a leading family in the Mafioso. In what came to be known as the Palm Sunday Massacre, Helena's family was assassinated. She fled to Sicily where she was trained under her cousin and then returned to Gotham. As the Huntress, Helena's extreme vigilantism crossed the line and put her at odds with Batman but he still invited her to join the Justice League Unlimited in an effort to calm her rage. Now in the League, the Huntress has forged a romantic relationship with the Question even though she was ousted from the JLU for attempting to kill her parents' murderer, Steven Mandragora. However, when she found out Mandragora had a son of his own, Huntress grudgingly spared Mandragora and turned him over to the authorities.
Though she was no longer a member of the League, Huntress continued to aid the Question in gathering intel on Cadmus. However, she accidentally viewed a recording of Superman, of the Justice Lords universe, killing President Luthor. Huntress kidnapped Jimmy Olsen, a photographer from the Daily Planet and used his wrist watch, which was given to him by Superman years ago, in order to get Superman's attention. Superman and Huntress stormed a Cadmus facility and rescued the Question. Huntress was allowed to accompany Question back to the JLU Watchtower.
Huntress continues to operate on her own. Months later, she witnessed Black Canary struggle to apprehend a mere pickpocket. Huntress tagged her rival and followed Black Canary to Bludhaven. Incognito, Huntress discovered Black Canary was one of a few female Leaguers being mind controlled by Metabrawl founder, Roulette. Huntress eventually figured out the League comm links were being manipulated. Together with Black Canary, Huntress fought off Roulette and Sonar. Black Canary offered Huntress membership back into the League but she refused. However, she obliged to a friendly spar.
