Todd Rice and his sister Jennie were raised by foster parents after their mother Rose gave them up without telling their father, Alan Scott. Todd grew up in Milwaukee with an abusive father, laying the ground for his delicate psyche. Early on, Todd discovered he could manifest shadow powers that reflected his own bitterness and pain.
