Elizabeth Arkham lived alone with her son Amadeus when her husband died. Her mind was deteriorating and Amadeus had to take care of her. Signs of Elizabeth's mental illness began to show as she started to eat bugs and ranted about an imaginary giant bat trying to take her.

Elizabeth's son Amadeus started to believe his mother's talk about a giant bat after her, and he murdered her out of mercy. Her death was believed by others to be suicide, and Amadeus had repressed his memory of the truth. Later, in memory of his mother, Amadeus created the Elizabeth Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane.
