Many years before Batman patrolled Gotham City, the Waynes were murdered in its streets and their son Bruce helplessly watched it all. Doctor Leslie Thompkins was the woman who took care of the boy while the police examined the scene of crime and the bodies were retrieved. Somehow, the talk they had that night established a bond between them and Bruce kept contact with her in the next years. Even though she knew about Bruce's obsession, she still hoped all those years that he would become a well grounded person. Hence, it was a shock for her when she found out that Bruce was in fact the Batman shortly after he made his first public appearance. She strongly dislikes that part of his personality. Leslie is one of the few persons who does not fear Batman at all and who freely express her thoughts in his face. Most times, she still treats him as the disoriented little kid he was. She is quite stubborn. Nevertheless, Bruce would do anything for her except quitting as a watchman. Leslie runs a small practice in the worst part of town where she helps the outcasts for free. Thus, even though she could have made a lot of money as a doctor, she is usually broken. Bruce has often offered to bury her in money, but she does not want to hear anything of it. She thinks that she needs to live like the people she heals to be trusted by them but she accepts whatever money he wants to give to help the others.

Recently, During Gotham City's War Games, the Spoiler suffered serious injuries, Leslie deliberately treated her improperly, resulting in her death, in hopes that it would teach Batman a lesson in that his constant use of children as crimefighters was dangerous to them. After giving all of her money to the Spoiler's daughter, she fled to Africa. Batman followed her, and told her if she ever returned he'd have her arrested.
