Slam Emerson won his nick in the streets in Cleveland, when he knocked down the local bully with a single swing. He has been swinging ever since.

He went to Vietnam at the beginning of the conflict. After a brief career both in the army and the cops, Samuel became a P.I. partly because he did not like discipline and partly because of his sense of justice. He wandered through different cities including Gotham, Metropolis, New York and even Keystone City. His way of life broke his marriage and he did not meet his boy for years. When Sam Jr decided he wanted to be like Slam, he wprked all he could to put him into the police academy, where he became a detective for GCPD.

Finally, he decided to settle in Gotham city. His first job there was an assigment from the mayor. He wanted him to track down the presumedly dead Catwoman. Slam moved the trail enough for Selina to come to him and asked him to drop the case. After that, he told the mayor where he should put it and befriended Selina.

Slam has often helped Catwoman lately. However, it is becoming clear that he is interested in more than her friendship..
