Before No Mans Land was declared, Vesper Fairchild used to hold a radio talk show. She came into focus when she started dating Bruce Wayne but, at the beginning of NML, she left Gotham and Bruce behind and became a journalist. First, she got a job as a stringer and then she started covering news everywhere. She was even nominated for the Pulitzer but she wanted more: she wanted to know who Batman was. Keeping that in mind, she returned to Gotham City. Also, believing him to be a useful tool, she restarted her relationship with Bruce Wayne. She got nothing about Batman except a warning from the man to not mess with him. However, things seemed to go pretty smooth with Bruce despite the intense dislike that his Sacha Bordeaux, his bodyguard, felt for her. Eventually, Bruce decided it was time to cut the relationship the hard way and dated her in his mansion while he was fooling around in the pool with three babes. He heard nothing else about the woman until he found her dead in his mansion a month later. He did not know what she had been there for nor who had killed her but Wayne was framed for her murder. Helpless to defend himself without revealing his true identity to the world, Wayne was sent to prison. However, the urge to be out in the streets made him escape and decide to give up his identity as Wayne. After turning his back on friends and family, who had already started to distrust him because of his attitude, Leslie Thompkins fixed him a meeting with Sloane, a former cop who had been trying to solve the murder of his parents for year. Sloane was about to die, so he asked him to investigate the Wayne's murder and, ignoring his true identity, to help their kid to get back his life. That event made Bruce take over the Batman again and start investigating who had framed him. He eventually found out that Lex Luthor had paid David Cain to destroy Wayne and, after capturing Cain, he cleaned his name. He felt terrible about Vesper, killed for simply loving him while he had been in love with Sacha Bordeaux instead. After things settled down, he had lost both women.
