Before Cassandra.
Before Helena. Even before Barbara. There was BETTY... Betty Kane exploded on the scene in BATMAN #139, April 1961. Betty Kane discovered that her Aunt, Kathy Kane was the Batwoman, and decided that she could keep her secret, only if Kathy took her as a Partner. Kathy agreed, and Bat-Girl was born. Bat-Girl only appeared six times in the comics. While she was Bat-Girl, her and Batwoman would often team up with Batman and Robin.
Bat-Girl even went as far as to hug, and kiss Robin for whom she liked. Betty was a natural athlete with extensive experience in acrobatics and unarmed combat. Her utility belt was much like Robin’s. Betty retired being Bat-Girl to become a Tennis Pro. Although she occasionally would put on the mantle every now and then, Betty would later become Flamebird, the leader of Titan’s West.
After the Crisis, Betty Kane ceased to exist. And all knowledge of Bat-Girl was erased from the memories of those close to her. Betty Kane became Bette Kane and kept the alter ego of Flambird, who still had a crush on Robin.
