His background is vague, but the mighty sea merchant made his first impression in Gotham City during an illegal brawl. Several police officers invaded the event, and before Batman could interfere, they all fell to the immensely powerful Cossack resulting in severe injuries and one casualty. One particular officer, Mercedes Stone, felt guilt over the death and became suspended from the police force due to excessive violence, causing her to join the illegal fight circuit.

It was during one of these events years later that Stone finally met the Cossack, with revenge on her mind. The contest, like many others of its nature, was broadcast live on a closed-circuit channel with wealthy businessmen making wagers. Evidently a fan favorite, the Cossack offered a vicious assault for the rabid audience but was interrupted by Batman who offered him a $20,000 challenge. While physically impressive in his own right, Cossack is no stranger to using any brutal weapons at his disposal as he demonstrated on Batman. However, he was eventually defeated with the help of some distraction and nearly executed just before police arrived on the scene. It is unclear whether the Cossack is currently behind bars or not.
