PLOT:
Batman and Commissioner Gordon find themselves with another serial killer stalking the streets of Gotham leaving a string of horribly mutilated victims in his wake. Each victim has a white lily floating in their pool of blood. As Gordon and Batman begin to discuss the
details of the third murder in as many weeks they find that they are not the only two forces on the case. Unwilling to take any part in helping the reformed Riddler cash in on this mystery, Batman retires for the evening.
Before he can return to the Batcave however, Batman returns and finds Catwoman waiting for him in the Bat-Mobile. Catwoman discusses the various
ingénues Bruce has been seen with while she was held captive on the Prison Planet (see: Salvation Run). Bruce briefly considers
chasing after Selina when she leaves but decides that the best course of action would be solving the murder first.
Finding the nonsensical nature of the case extremely frustrating, Batman decides to see what the amateurs think about the case. Turning to an online chat-room called "The Heirs of Dupin," Batman discusses the case with
everyday amateur sleuths as well as Detective Chimp and Riddler (who is the whole time
unaware that he is actually working with his former enemy). The conversation is cut short however when Riddler receives a package from the courier and signs off to go and pursue
his hot new lead.
Finally Batman turns to the only possibly option left - the murders are in fact completely random and are actually an attempt to cover up another murder. Upon doing a search for recent unsolved murders Bruce comes upon a name he recognizes - a high school coach named Robert Benjamin who volunteered his time as a grief counselor for victims
of violent crimes.
Working on a hunch, Batman uses the tracking device he had planted in Riddler's car as a precaution to track Nigma to a small farm in the middle of nowhere. Once inside he finds Riddler gagged and bound to a chair while his assailant takes a moment
to decide which knife to use to kill the former quiz obsessed criminal.
As it turns out, Jeremy Ellis lost his love on the night he proposed to her when Riddler and his gang decided to rob the restaurant they were dining at. After pouring his heart out to Benjamin, Ellis killed Benjamin to cover up his tracks and began staging
the elaborate "serial killings" all in an effort of drawing the Riddler out and killing him.
The Riddler tries to apologize to Ellis, reminding him that after his bout of amnesia he honestly doesn't remember half of the crimes he
committed but Ellis isn't having it. Batman steps in and saves Nigma from a shotgun blast but isn't fast enough to stop Jeremy when he turns the
shotgun on himself.
Batman decides to leave Riddler tied to his chair, reminding him that the hounds should be arriving any minute. But before he goes he leaves the Riddler with something to occupy his time - just how many lives are ruined because of
his antics? Perhaps this is a puzzle Batman could ask himself as well...
