PLOT:
Having spent years combing the depths of the ocean looking for his missing wife and child following the fall of Atlantis, Tempest finally returns to Atlantis. It's a place that he could perhaps call home for himself if for nothing other reason than a lack of a better term. During his time as Aqualad, Arthur Curry's fellow-outcast sidekick, Garth was hated for his purple colored eyes, much the same was as his mentor was for his blonde hair. The people of Atlantis viewed the different hued irises as an bad omen. And now, returning to Atlantis after all this time, he finds it hard not to agree with them. Because after all these years searching for his family, he has come to realize that they lie within the city of Atlantis itself - crushed and buried beneath the rubble.
Giving his loved ones a proper burial, Garth is in outside the empty Royal tomb of Arthur Curry when he is accosted by his uncle Slizzath. Though both are trained in the arts of
sorcery,
it was Slizzath the pursued the darker energies - venturing into the realm of Necromancy. Their only tie to one another, other than blood, is that both are outcasts in the underwater society.
The demented dark sorcerer provokes a battle with Garth, knowing that he will fall because as he says, soon "the dead will rise." Garth defeats Slizzath but the battle takes its toll, knocking him
unconscious. Bystanders, believing in the
common misconception that Garth was Arthur Curry's son, take him to recover at the feet of the royal throne. The seat is vacant. With Mera lost in grief, she is not able to lead the Atlanteans. And Garth can tell from the looks in their eyes
that now they look to him for guidance, for leadership. But he remains unsure if he is capable of towing such a line. So, Garth takes himself to Gotham City to find his friend Dick Grayson.
For the second time in both man's lives they once again find themselves orphans. And as he stands on the
precipice, debating whether or not to accept the Atlantean throne, Garth seeks out advice from his good friend.
Ultimately the two men agree that their predecessors would be proud of them for being willing and able to step in to fill their shoes. And so the outsider returns to Atlantis to rule as King and change their
perception of him once and for all,
just as the great Arthur Curry once had.
