If memory serves, Rachel was suppose to be in the sequels, or the sequel, following Batman Begins. On BOF, it was said that she was gonna die by the hands of the Joker. Now with news of Katie Holmes wanting to quit acting after being a mother, I began to think on what would happen to her character in the sequels if she is unlikely to return.
1) Before BB2 happens, Rachel gets a job as a D.A. again in another place. She leaves Gotham and Bruce and Harvey Dent comes in to the picture. While Bruce is friends with Dent, he can't help but feel alone with Rachel gone.
2) Between BB and BB2, Rachel is in the witness protection program because she was on the dirt linked to what's left with Falcone and other crime bosses. Once the matter is resolved by the help of Batman, Rachel comes home in either BB2 or BB3 only to be killed by Joker or Two Face.
3) Before BB2, Racel was killed in a unsolved murder case which has been driving Batman with several cases including the mysterious Joker. He believes Maroni or Sofia Falcone to be invovled only to find out Joker was behind it for "fun" (in BB2 or BB3). Batman later goes in and beats the crap out of the Joker and almost kills the Joker (Ex. HUSH) but is stopped.
Which one do you like? Personally, I like either 2 or 3. Depending on if Katie agrees to do a cameo. But the first one is like what happened to the other love interests in the previous franchise.

I like the idea of her moving on. It would be easy to have a scene at the beginning of the next movie introducing Harvey, and saying Rachel had gone elsewhere (they can even throw in Metropolis, Star City, etc.). The final scenes of BB put a nice wrap on the relationship between her and Bruce, so killing her seems unnecessary at this point. |

I could imagine her leaving (mentioning a DCU city would be cool). Getting killed would be a bit harsh for such a "good guy" character, especially a sweet 'n fragile woman.

it would add to the jokers sick twisted mind AS WELL as give batman and joker a reason to become such intense rivals. maybe rachel dying could be good for the story. although i personally doubt it would happen

I think it whould be wonderful for her to leave before the start of the movie. That whould remove any hero/girlfriend romantic trouble-time wasting dialouge clich?s a la the Spider-man movies. Batman has to be different! As an addum, its good to be back on the forum.
