If honest, I'm surprised you asked that! I still remember when Heath Ledger was announced - everyone kicked off about it. You were one of the ones who didnt'. You basically said just trust Nolan. Given what I witnessd last night I'm happy to take your inital advice! (although in fairness I wasn't one of the the ones getting my knickers in a twist about Heath).
It's difficult to know what Nolan will be thinking for a 3rd outing. In Begins he took a villian that is essentially a bit part player in Batman's history and turned him into popular force; the recent "Resurrection" series was selling out of 1st copies faster than comic shops could shelve them (at least in the early issues, until DC got an idea of just how popular it was), and yet in the 2nd film he's simply gone for the most iconic villian in comics.
For the 3rd film I'd love to see a couple of things;
Robin "Nolanised" (although I don't think he will be), and Black Mask. I've always thought he was a particularly evil character, and given the actual look they achieved with Two-Face, I don't think the visuals would be a problem.
Now that I've come down a bit I've got a slight complaint about DK (and at risk of sounding like I'm just copying our esteeemed webmaster, I noticed Chris said it too) - as a child I actually came to Batman through Adam West's TV series. It was a BIG event in the televisual week. Batman was always a hero. His goodness was taken as a given by the grateful citizens of Gotham - now call me old fashioned but I like it that way. I've read literally 1000s of comics since I ran home from school to see the Caped Crusader, & I know it's 2008 and that sycophantic Commisioner Gordon and Gothan Public wouldnt work, but a little of that would've been nice. That said; my minor quibble was somewhat counter balanced by Gordon's own words at the end, and those of his son. "He didn't do anything wrong".

I actually love the fact that Batman's a fugitive by the end. Heroism is about sacrifice; and what better sacrifice is there than sacrificing your heroisim?
And again on villians, I won't need to be convinced when Nolan announces what he's doing, but until then I just can't imagine what he could do. On the other hand, I could have never in a million years imagind what they'd do with TDK, so maybe I'm just too unimaginative?

Oh, don't be so hard on yourself! I think it's much more a case of the brothers Nolan and Mr. Goyer knowing what us Batman fans want more than perhaps we do! |

i am hearing alot of "nolan will never recast the joker", and maybe that's so, but i'm kinda shocked that people almost don't WANT to ever see a different take on the joker. i mean, don't get me wrong, heath was great... but that's merely one interpretation. it gave me more than any other performance has, i'll grant that, but... i'm not so unimaginative that i can't see how a few years down the line, someone else might come along and do something else totally new and different with the role. same with batman. i love bale, im a HUGE fan of the man's work... but there's always gonna be someone else who'll come along and don the cape.
i think the thing that's truly important is that what bale and ledger and nolan and eckhart and oldman have done here sets the ground rules for anything that comes next. the batman nation won't stand to see another schumacher-esque failure. anyone who puts on the red lips or the cape next is gonna have to do their own thing with it, and give us something as daring in its own right as what these people have done.
if nolan and bale dont do a third movie, i will be looking forward to who DOES follow them, and what those people will bring to the table. |

Great point Tib and i'm looking forward for the next one myself.
was it true that DC/WB was pushing for a part 3 a few months ago because of the hype off the trailers?

Nolan's doing a third; it hasn't been announced yet but Goyer was quoted saying Nolan had a plan for the third... So he's probably in.

Just saw The Dark Knight for a second time, this time in IMAX. It was great, although I thought I saw some additional content during the Bank Robbery? I know Nolan shot the Begining and another scene in IMAX.
As for a 3rd film, I really hope Nolan does it. Black Mask would be good for the film and maybe the Riddler. But I don't know how Catwoman or The Penguin would fit in the realistic Nolan universe. |

I don't think Black Mask would work, mostly because a burn victim whose face is reduced almost to a skull would be far too redundant after Two-face.
Riddler would deffinately be on the top of my list at this point, he's big enough in the general public's eye to fill in Joker and Two-face's sizeable shoes and he's brings an interesting ellement as the only person whose actually smarter than Batman.
Then they need to introduce an ally. Either Catwoman or Robin. Batman is obviously headed into dark territory, he lost the woman he loves, he lost one of his greatest allies and hopes, and he sacrificed his public image and his alliance with Gordon for the greater good. He'll need someone to give him hope, whether it's falling in love with Catwoman or helping the troubled young man he once was... Someone will need to keep him alive.

Well if there is a robin. (which i hope there isnt.) there will be a new batman.
In proving himself both awesome and smart, The Dark Knight star Christian Bale, perhaps the most widely praised Batman actor ever, has declared that he would resign if the producers ever tried to introduce the sidekick boy wonder Robin to the franchise.
To quote him directly, the super hero star had this to say:
“If Robin crops up in one of the new Batman films, I’ll be chaining myself up somewhere and refusing to go to work.”
I for one am glad to hear this kind of conviction from one of my favorite actors. Robin’s inclusion in previous installments fell very flat and his role in the comic has always seemed a bit off. Troubled billionaire Bruce Wayne takes an orphan as his ward and guides, or virtually forces, him into a dangerous life of crime fighting. Weird.
But fans of the grittier Batman appearing in the Nolan films can rejoice. While the success of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight about to blow up the box office, Nolan and Bale will likely hold the mantel as long as they want it. Provided at least one (preferably both) stays on board, we’ll never have to suffer the acrobatic and borderline creepy exploits of a teen child in tights fighting crime alongside one of our favorite heroes.

Reports in the US say studio bosses have set their sights on Depp as The Riddler Photo: GETTY
Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker has set the bar high for Gotham City villains, but reports in the US say studio bosses have set their sights on Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.
"Producers are convinced that the role of The Riddler is perfect for Depp. Johnny's a pro. He'll be able to take direction and still make the character his own. And what better Penguin is there than Philip Seymour Hoffman?" a source said.
They could be joining Angelina Jolie - the actress is reported to be after the role of Catwoman.
The Riddler was played by Jim Carrey in 1995 film Batman Forever and Frank Gorshin in the Sixties television series. As for The Penguin, he was portrayed on the small screen by Burgess Meredith and in 1992 film Batman returns by Danny DeVito.
Plans for the sequel are yet to be announced but it is likely to star Christian Bale reprising his role as The Caped Crusader.
The Dark Knight has smashed box office records in the US, taking $314 million in just 10 days.
There is even talk of it challenging Titanic to become the biggest movie of all time. Titanic took $600 million in the US. The Dark Knight certainly looks set to reach second place in the all-time chart and beat Star Wars, which made $460 million.
PSH is one of my favorite actors of all time. I would love to see it happen all though I doubt it will. Johnny as the riddler? I dont know about that.

I do believe that both Chrisitan Bale and the WB execs have the same mantra as I do; "Trust Nolan".
Nolan just made one of the biggest block-busters of all time, the producers aren't likely to force out by making him use a character he doesn't want to... So if Robin's in the third then it's Nolan's idea.
And Bale's been through two films as Batman, he has consitantly seen eye to eye with Nolan's story, so if Nolan finds a way to fit Robin into the Dark Knight franchise then it would be an easy feat for him to convince Bale to see his point of view.
Bottom line, Bale's probably staying as Batman no matter what.
On Depp as Riddler, he's about my second choice as Riddler. But he might be a little too popular.

I'm not sure that Bale would've said that personally.
Also - whoever wrote that (and I know you were just quoting it KJ) has missed a fundamental point. It wasn't Robin that fell flat in the films, it was the films themselves! I challenge anyone to watch the Schumacher stuff in the post BB and DK world, and say they're anything other than junk. Many people didnt need Nolan's films to think Batman Forever was a load of rubbish, and no-one needed Nolan to come to an accurate conclusion about Batman and Robin.
With everything that he (Nolan) has done, it's just daft for Bale to think he couldnt handle Robin.
& re Robin being "weird" - I hope Phil doesnt see that.....

There's a small piece on BOF from a trusted Insider, saying they don't think Mr. Nolan would be putting either Robin or Catwoman in the next film, if he decides to do another one.

haha i actually don't mind people thinking the robin concept is weird. but more importantly, i don't think people see the bigger picture behind robin's existence in the batman mythos. i'll save my details for later.
and if bale doesn't want robin, then so be it. i don't think it's worth risking the chances. but i think his hatred for robin goes way back to batman forever. he just might be bitter for not being casted as robin.
i'm really hyped for a "dark knight hunt" movie though.
