Very well done issue, if a bit on the brutal side. In addition to the strong writing for Tim, I have to say that this is one of the best Joker stories I've read. He's written as a true sociopath: other people are litereally nothing to him, mere props during his routine.

The scene that really captured this was when Robin pulled out that line from the old Marx Brother's movie (for what it's worth, Joker did attribute the line to the correct movie, which was the same one referenced earlier in the book). If you really think about Joker's set up before and reaction after Robin's line, they were pretty chilling.

Detective Comics #826 is what Paul Dini's run in a Batman comic is supposed to be. The previous stories just felt like re-runs of cartoon episodes. Since he doesn't have the censors that a cartoon has, Dini was able to take the Joker to the next level. The Joker is a character that he has always gotten so it was great to see him cut loose. If you only read one issue of Detective this year make it this one.

Blinkin' 'eck!

Joker is postively evil in this one.

That was a dark story. I agree with Spencer - great Robin writing. It's good to occasionally move away from Batman and just bring him in, in an authoritative, overseeing way at the conclusion. That was cool.

I thought Nate was a bit harsh on the previous Detective - it wasn't great, but it wasnt that bad; but this kind of put it into perspective.

DETECTIVE COMICS #827

SPOILERS INCLUDED

Writer-Paul Dini
Art-Don Kramer and Wayne Faucher
Letterer-Jared K. Fletcher
Cover Art-Simone Bianchi
Editor-Peter Tomasi

PLOT:
After surviving a near-fatal explosion, Batman discovers the Ventriloquist and Scarface are back ? with a vengeance. As the Dark Knight tries to unravel the mystery behind his enemies' resurrection, Scarface unites the most feared names in the Gotham Underworld and introduces them to a surprising new ally in their war against Batman.

REVIEW:
At the time of this review, the idea of getting this Detective issue a week earlier must've been a Christmas miracle. Anyway, back to the issue. In the OYL debut of Detective/Batman "Face the Face", Ventriloquist & Scarface were one of the villians who died. But in this issue of Detective Comics by writer Paul Dini, the Scarface has returned. I figured that he would come back but I kept on wondering if the plan to not brign back people who die in comics was still the case after Infinite Crisis.

At first I thought Catwoman would be dead, but that was a trick. What wasn't a trick was the new Ventriloquist: a woman. That was a surprise as I thought Wesker was going to return. I'm not saying women don't make great villians, they do in shows like BTAS to video games like Metal Gear Solid, but it was a shocker. Who is this woman? We don't know her name but she keeps on calling Scarface her "daddy". And as Batman said, and proven, she will be covering her tracks. I thought that since it was a woman this time, things would be different. But its still the same old thign with Scarface. The only difference is that this Ventriloquist is better than Wesker. Instead of saying "Gatman", since Wesker wasn't good at all, this female Ventriloquist can properly say "Batman".

Another thing from this issue that was a great thing to ahve from Batman: The Animated Series was Batmabn's trick that he used against the Ventriloquist & Scarface from "Read my Lips". He throws his voice to trick Scarface into thinkking Batman is somewhere or someone that he actually isn't. And just like what he said in that episode, he mentions he learned that from Zatara.

Overall, this was another good one after the humerous Christmas issue last time. I liked this idea of a woman Ventriloquist and since she got away from it, we will be seeign her again. And that will be good as I like to get to know more about her. I also liked that this was a direct sequel to Face the Face and since the artist did that arc too, it made this issue fit with the art back with that arc a year back.

RATING: 8/10

What's in store for next issue: One of Bruce Wayne's oldest friends is found dead in Gotham Bay, ripped apart by a mysterious sea monster. As he investigates the bizarre death, Batman is drawn into a fatal encounter with the murderous creature.

Dini has finally hit his stride. After the great last issue, 827 brings back one of the coolest Bat-villains with a new "host" (or whatever you would call the person that is possessed by Scarface). It is implied that she is the daughter of Arnold Wesker (who was murdered in the "Face the Face" story-arc). She seems to have a much more agressive and a better ventriloquist than Wesker. This definitely sets the stage for some great stories in the future.

As a side note, this is Batman's 800th appearance in Detective Comics. I began reading comics around the time that 627 came out and because it was around the 50th anniversary they celebrated that 600th appearance. 727 and now 827 have come out, but neither have had issues of any significance the 627 had. In this time in comics where it is rare for a title to go to 100 issues, they should celebrate those milestones when they happen.

HERE is the solicitation information. Remember you can view pretty much every Batman comic in the comics section.

It looks to be a Sci-Fi monster movie type story. It sounds pretty cool, but I am always a little leary of the Bruce Wayne's friends stories. They seem to stir up continuity issues.

DETECTIVE COMICS #828

SPOILERS INCLUDED

Writer-Paul Dini
Art-Don Kramer and Wayne Faucher
Letterer-Jared K. Fletcher
Cover Art-Simone Bianchi
Editor-Peter Tomasi

PLOT:
In a party thrown by Bruce Wayne, with the Riddler invited, a close friend of his dies from a shark attack. While not teaming up this time, Batman & The Riddler go to investigate the mysterious death.

REVIEW:
After that surprising previous issue, we continue on with this one. In some ways, its sorta a sequel to issue #822 when Riddler first started his P.I. gig. Its pretty obivious, if you go back to that issue, that Dini wasn't planning on stopping that idea at all. Which is good because it makes you wonder what Dini is planning. Remember what he said back at Comic Con '06: "These issues may not be stand-alone as you think".

In this issue, we get another story about a death of another of Bruce's childhood friends. Many would say that this kind of storyline being used is boring and should be stopped completely. I don't see that. I see these kinds of stories as having people who are close to Bruce Wayne's past and in turn his parents that once they'll gone, he loses one more connection to his parents. Another reason is that if that friend happens to be largely in greed, then it symbolizes a what-if to Bruce Wayne's well-being with his money.

This issue is no exception. Matthew Atkins is someone of Bruce's friends since childhood. Yet, they hadn't seen each other in ten years which gives you a gap in time for this mystery for both Bruce & Batman to solve. As the mystery unholds, you find out more suspects and more findings that in turn leads you to the finale and the reveal. Thus, you find out who and what Matthew Atkins is and has been since Bruce had known him, how much he's changed. The last scene of this issue had Batman given the question by Riddler "Was he someone you knew?" to which Batman replies "No. Not at all". Now that might be because Batman is trying to make sure Riddler doesn't know Bruce is Batman (again) but it symbolizes that the Matthew Atkins that Bruce knew is not the same man at all anymore. He is now a different man, someone both Bruce and Batman would hate.

Since I mentioned Riddler, I'll talk about him. In this issue, it seems he is on the side of angels. Although, not being one himself. You ask yourself in all his scenes if he is really on the good side now, or if he is playign around. You could get that vibe that he might have known what was going on when he was interviewed by a news station about Atkins' death. Yet, when Batman found him and he was hit pretty hard on the head, for real, then your vibe changes. While having The Riddler being on the good side gives us a turn when he is with Batman solving cases, you also get that feeling that something will happen and we might not have gotten any clues of it but we didn't look hard enough. On the same page, when Riddler gives his detective theory on the whole mystery to Batman, he kinda agrees and smiles. So you wonder if he is buying Riddler on the good side or if he's playing with him too. Comics have double meanings, they're cool since they make you become detectives too.

Overall, this was another solid issue. I had no problems with it to list because afetr I was done, all I wanted to do to make sure this review had the reasons why I liked it. ONe thing to point out was that ince Bruce's party was that of costumes, he wasn't wearign a Batman costume but a Zorro one. Nice connection to Bob Kane's inspiration for Batman to begin with.

RATING: 8/10

What's in store for next issue: There's a bomb in Wayne Tower, and Robin must handle it alone.

DETECTIVE COMICS #829

Written by Stuart Moore
Art by Andy Clarke
Cover by Simone Bianchi
Edited by Peter Tomasi

PLOT:
A costumed terrorist called VOX plans to blow up Wayne Tower ? and he's trapped Bruce Wayne in a top-floor conference room. Aided only by his mentor's radioed instructions, Robin must face the bomber alone!

REVIEW:
So after #828, Paul Dini decided to take a second break for two issues to be done by someone else. Unlike the other times, I didn't feel wrong about this break from Dini. The only concern I had, because it was still his run and this was Detective Comics, was that I was reminded of the first break in the Dr. Phosphorous issue and how bad that was. I didn't want to see something similar again in here but if it was, it was two issues worth of it. Let's check it out.

After reading the issue, it was proved to me, and hopefully to anyone who wants to read that issue, that the problems found in the other Detective storyline will not be foudn here. In that, it was a good issue. At first I thought it was going to focus on Robin, similar to the favorite issue of Dini's run: #826. But its not the case. Instead, its Bruce Wayne helping the others get out while Robin tries to find the villian, wih both talking to each other at the same time. Don't worry Robin fans, he is the only one of the Bat Family whose in costume.

This issue has a theme and focus on terrorism, and like pop culture itself, this issue reflects many of the things in the news today while not really directing itself to the big things like Iraq and such. Its reflected in the meeting with Wayne and those reprsenting their countries, and the villian Vox. Vox is attacking Wayne Tower because he sees it as a symbol of economic oppression, and he relates it to the death of many seen in the fictional Republic of Jalib. And speaking of Jalib, the person representing, Mr. Al Ibn, is with Wayne and he is seen arguing with Ms. Tarkov, from another fictional nation of Markovia. And what they argue is the possible funding of terrorism from the other's nation. So you see, that theme is presented in this book. But don't worry, it does not take the theme and jams it down your, the reader's, throat. Its a simple thing of what's going on and thats it.

Overall, this was a nice issue and I can't wait to see it finished in issue #830 with part 2. As I said, this issue features a villian and a theme regarding terrorism but its not a lecture, nor is it one of those things that throws it in your face. I'm reminded of the O'Neil & Adams' Green Lantern/Green Arrow comics of the '70s where it was a springboard for what was happening in the newspapers at that time while it did not at all touch upon the real thing. Its the same thing here.

RATING: 8/10

Next Issue: The Siege Part 2, with Bruce Wayne helpign Robin fight off the villian Vox without his dual identity.

DETECTIVE COMICS #830

Written by Stuart Moore
Art by Andy Clarke
Cover by Simone Bianchi
Edited by Peter Tomasi

PLOT:
Robin faces certain death as massive explosions rock Wayne Tower. Only Bruce Wayne can stop the terrorist — but changing to Batman will mean revealing his dual identity!

REVIEW:
The first part in #829 was serious and went into today's news without hitting you in the head with it. I was surprised and enjoyed that issue because the previous fill-in issue wasn't at all good. Now with #830, lets see if the enjoyment remains.

And you know what? It still does. Robin was sprayed with C4 and when Bruce was helping him to get it off, it reminded me of Batman Beyond when Bruce was helping Terry handle and get out of situations. It had that feeling. Unlike part 1, Batman does appear in costume in the second half of this issue.

The villian, Vox, and the connection between him and Mr. Al Ibn & Ms. Tarkov and the terrorism continued the theme from the first part in here. When I mean "connection", I don't mean they are working together in any way. With the crisis of Vox's plan to destroy the tower, Al Ibn & Tarkov's argument gets into a fight. And when Wayne says they should work together even when their lives at stake, they don't listen. Its only when Wayne has to help Robin that he disappears that it causes those two to work together, even if its to find Wayne. As Batman says in the end "A Better world is to be born, maybe thats the first step."

I'm not gonna say anything about Vox and what happens to him. I'll leave that with the readers.

Overall, what made the first part enjoyable did the same for this issue. You still had the theme of whats happening in the newspapers, and in the end you get a lesson. We know what that lesson is, so that lesson is really for the countries that don't like nor trust each other. It was really good, and done well.

RATING: 8/10

Next Issue: Paul Dini's fan favorite creation from Batman: The Animated Series appears in the next adventure: Harley Quinn.

DETECTIVE COMICS #831

Written by Paul Dini
Art by Don Kramer and Wayne Faucher
Cover by Simone Bianchi
Edited by Peter Tomasi

PLOT:
A bizarre incident forges a temporary alliance between the Dark Knight and his daffy-but-deadly adversary Harley Quinn. Forget everything you think you know about Dr. Harleen Quinzel as Batman uncovers long-buried secrets from his enemy's unknown past.

REVIEW:
I think that when Paul Dini was announced to be writing Detective Comics, we all knew what to expect. Alot of boldness, greatness. But one thing: to expect Zatanna & Harley Quinn in the run. Harley Quinn is the character he and Bruce Timm created for Batman: The Animated Series and in turn, became a popular character. And Zatanna....well is a character whom Dini loves, and married by the way. So with Zatanna already seen, its time for Harley to make a appearence. Here she is!

There is no doubt to anyone that when you add Dini and the character of Harley that a negetive reaction would ever happen. And it didn't. I liked this issue. It reminded me of the BTAS episode "Harlequinade" where Harley worked with Batman. In this issue, while she doesn't work with him, she does go to the right side of the law. Although, its only because of she was turned to be released from Arkham. Dini also said to expect the return of Sugar and Scarface and we do get them here.

Harley is the focus of the story. I can't remember if this happened before as I'm seeing it as a first, but the first page has Harley in her thoughts, two seperate thoughts. There is a insane and a sane sdies of her. This probably is a good explanation that while she does tag along with the Joker, she isn't and most likely won't go into the craziness that Joker is as there a way to pull her away. We see this in all her appearences of whatever media. She might go the evil side, but she does stop at times and goes back to normal, and we buy both. But from that, she is a cute girl (because the artists make her that way) and she is funny from her actions like her hogging onto the ceiling because she's excited. So all in all, what you expect to come from this issue from her, you get it.

Overall, this was nice. On Scarface, a little spoiler, but Batman mentions that those dummies are rigged to explode and Sugar kicked it into two cars and exploded. I doubt thats the last of it, it can't be again, but the fact that she did it (and again I'm using the knowledge I have) makes her different than Wesker as he would always save the dummy rather than to leave it and make a new one. Speaking of Wesker, we get a flashback to when Harley was first brought to Arkham as a criminal and how she and Wesker were friendly toward one another and how she was sad for him because of Scarface and wanted to help. I foudn that kinda touching.

RATING: 8/10

Next Issue: Batman vs The Terrible Trio. But its not Batman who is the prey...

I read this issue of Detective Comics, and I must say that this was quite interesting! Seeing Harley Quinn in this issue reminded me of Catwoman after she underwent her change in 2001! Very good read! Cat3

DETECTIVE COMICS #832

Written by Royal McGraw
Art by Andy Clarke
Cover by Simone Bianchi
Edited by Pater Tomasi

PLOT:
Terror comes in threes! The nefarious Terrible Trio return, only instead of being the hunters, they're the prey! And the only one who can save them from certain death is Batman.

REVIEW:
The previous fill-in was a two parter that had elements like terrorism in it. Written by Stuart Moore, the story was pretty good. Better than the last fill-in. And when it was announced that there was to be another fill-in, I felt okay this time. That is, until I heard the name of Royal McGraw as the writer. McGraw wrote the Dr. Phosphorus issue in #825 that was a bad issue. And made me cringe on the idea of the next fill-in, which was the Vox one. Even though it was going to be the same thing, one issue, I braced myself for the worst. Either way, let's see.

And you know what? I was right. This issue wasn't bad as McGraw's last Detective fill-in, but this wasn't even on the good mark either. It was fair. It felt dull on the storyline in the middle (Act 2), and some of the dialogue, from Gordon, Alfred, & Batman, was almost over the top. Everyone knows the Terrible Trio from the Batman The Animated Series episode of the same name. And, in some ways, that episode was not seen highly. Same thing in their comics’ counterpart. So why would someone want to bring them back? After looking at this issue, it might've been because it break them apart because its revealed that Shark went their a nervous breakdown to kill the other two, and maybe the plan was to have just him. I don't know. My review for this is short.

Overall, this issue was not bad as McGraw's last fill-in, but it was fair. So it’s something to be missed. And I mean that. There might be a couple of shots that might interest people, I don't know why. Such as Batman being bitten by Shark's new six rowed shark teeth, something like a vampire. That’s up to you. Another thing: I don't want McGraw to do anymore issues of Detective, or anything. First a bad issue, now a fair one, even though I don't know even know who he is, these two issues he did are enough for me to say "get out!".

RATING: 2/5

Next Issue: Dini returns (good) and does a two parter featuring his wife Mist-, oh wait, his favorite character; Zatanna.

DETECTIVE COMICS #833

Written by Paul Dini
Art by Don Kramer and Wayne Faucher
Cover by Simone Bianchi
Edited by Peter Tomasi

PLOT:
In part one from this two-parter: When her former assistant is killed in a dangerous trick gone wrong, Zatanna; the Maid of Magic, turns to Batman to uncover the real circumstances behind the young woman's death, leading them to a confrontation with the mysterious illusionist Ivar Loxias — and an ultimately terrifying revelation.

REVIEW:
Last issue was a bad one. The Terrible Trio, a group that shouldn't have been made, shouldn't have been used, and shouldn't be ever again, was in that issue and presented a failed attempt to make them better. Which it won't, so why bother? The worst of all, it was writer Royal McGraw who wrote that issue whom shouldn't write comics or anything that of Batman ever again. So that explains that once that issue was done, I couldn't wait for Dini to resume after that one issue. So let's get started.

This issue was great. Dini did a great job on this issue. I felt that he put more here than the rest. It doesn't mean that now I dislike the issues prior to this, that's not the case. Although the fill-in issues that were bad, stay bad. But the previous Dini issues were great anyway, but this had something more. I couldn't explain way. Maybe it's because Dini actually pulled a Grant Morrison here, that wasn't expected. The Morrison I'm talking about is, which is a spoiler, is that the enemy named Ivar Loxias, who had appeared in #824 to which this two parter is a follow up to whom also had Zatanna but in a cameo, turns out to be actually Joker. That was unexpected and surprising. So this issue was great

I think since his favorite character, whom he really married, was Zatanna and she had connections to Bruce Wayne and Batman, it was obvious to see her in her run. We did in that cameo in #824, but here is where she is not in a cameo role but as the supporting role or main role next to Batman himself. One of the interesting things in the story is that we see how Bruce and Zatanna met, when they were no more than around nine maybe ten years old. It was after Bruce's parents died and Zatara brought Zatanna to Bruce's birthday to show his magic tricks, to which Bruce didn't see because he didn't want to nor care for the show. Then Zatanna came in, and she did a trick which Bruce could've care less about, but instead of the simple trick of the coin disappearing and reappearing from his ear, she blew out bubbles instead from her hand, to which Bruce became surprised. Thus starting the friendship they had. And in this issue, they are still friends; they work together with no problems, something of a nice team-up. But Batman does reveal that despite that, one of the things he still cannot let go is of Zatanna erasing his memory revealed in "Identity Crisis". And from that, at first I felt that Batman here wasn't letting go of something I think he should've after such a while. But then I rethought, and then I realized that going from the flashbacks seeing the first time Zatanna and Bruce met, thus knowing how far back they have been friends, it was the fact that his long time friend betrayed him which is why he cannot let go of that even though there is nothing bitter from him to her. Hopefully, he will let go of that and have nothing of betrayal from inside him about Zatanna. Maybe that's what part 2 will have.

Overall, this was a great issue. I say its great because it felt like it had something more than the previous issues from Paul Dini on Detective Comics. Plus, it had a twist that no one, me nor anyone on boards, saw coming. The Batman/Zatanna team-up was good, and I can't wait for part 2 to finish this.

RATING: 4/5

Next Issue: Part 2 of the Batman/Zatanna team-up, against the Clown Prince.

I got #833 and will look it over. I just wonder about next month's issue, because it sounds like Zatanna gets killed off or something.

Well that would be big, for sure.

Nate - man you got it in for MacGraw!! I often think you're pretty much bang on, but I don't get the problems with him you do! I'm not saying he's Morrison/Miller/Finger level, but blimey......

Re This Issue; I thought this was a great - infact really great - comic. It's difficult to fully judge at halftime, but if the follow up is as good then I'd say this has been Dini's best Detective.

Brilliant.

Well I looked up his name, and I didn't see any other work on comics he did. The two issues of Detective are the only ones and if thats how he writes and what the execution of his stories turn out to be, then he shouldn't even be allowed to write this books.

You don't get it, boy... this isn't a mudhole... it's an operating table.
(crack!)
And I'm the surgeon.

I finally got a chance to read this issue. I agree it was very well done as usual, but #826 is still my favorite of Dini's run so far.

One part that hasn't been mentioned that I saw, and was one of the strongest (if simplest) scenes from the whole story: the scene in the cave just before Batman & Zatanna leave. It was only a few panels, but it conveyed a stronger and more realistic reaction to the events of Identity Crisis than pretty much anything I have read elsewhere.
