BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL #5
Written by Andy Diggle
Art and Cover by Whilce Portacio and Richard Friend
Edited by Mike Carlin
PLOT:
It's all-out war as Batman goes up against an army of Lex Luthor's G.I. Robots!
REVIEW:
In the previous issue, the idea of the whole series of Batman Confidential from the "Rules of Engagement" gave me a feeling of dread ness all of a sudden. While I handled the issues when it started, it changed suddenly. Finally reading that issue a second time, it was just me and the issue has nice moments. So that done, here's issue 5.
First of all, the "of 8" that was under the issue number for the past issues is GONE. So the book is not facing cancellation. As for the issue, this issue went by quick. Its not like issues like this aren't quick at all, but this went by really quick. It’s all due to the action sequence in the beginning with Batman and his batplane. It was a very cool action sequence and it had me dancing and mincing the scenes as I read them. I was really cool.
One of the things people might look at are the G.I. Robots talking like humans do. The thing is they have A.I.'s, and it goes back to the beginning of the story of the guy who got killed within the robot. And that makes sense, until you read the lines and somehow, even it is has an A.I. it wouldn't talk kinda like that. With emotions when it’s ready to kill. So it was something that didn't feel right to me. The other thing people might question is Luthor following this storyline. Until further notice, Birthright is still the main Superman origin storyline and Luthor does go to jail after that. But from what’s going on here, you would wonder how the rest of Luthor's life such as him as president would still happen. Him getting caught is something you would believe might happen in the dn, although we don't know, and the DCAU Luthor got into the same troubles and still people (DCAU people) bought him being a good guy running for president. Maybe that’s the plan in DC's head. Something to point out.
Overall, with this arc ending, there was good action. But people might say the issue felt short because of the action. I would feel the same way, and hope the last part has enough to end this. The art, I'll admit, has seen better days. People will still talk about it. With one more to go on this arc, lest see how it concludes.
RATING: 7.5/10
Next Issue: The 6 issue arc of Rules of Engagement concludes.
You don't get it, boy... this isn't a mudhole... it's an operating table.
(crack!)
And I'm the surgeon.

I've not read number 5 yet, but the art has been bugging me since the outset.
I'm glad this story is coming to it's conclusion with no.6. It's been strong enough (art reservations aside) for me to stick with it, but I don't know how much longer that would've kept up. I remember Darknight said he was ready to drop this, and I'm now the same.

Where have you seen that? As far as I had read, Kurt Busiek said that they are taking elements from all the origins and leaning a little more towards Birthright, but there is no clear cut origin right now.
Click HERE & HERE for a couple of articles on that.
Back to Batman Confidential. I have been really disappointed with this series. I really didn't mind the art, but the story has just been really bad. When I picked up this issue at the shop, I told the guy to remove it from my pull list. I don't really care how the story ends. It is so forgetable that I have had difficulty keeping up from issue to issue. Maybe they should have kept Legends going with its loose continuity, instead of this.

BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL #6
Written by Andy Diggle
Art and Cover by Whilce Portacio and Richard Friend
Edited by Mike Carlin
PLOT:
The newly augmented Batman goes against Lex Luthor's burgeoning LexCorp in a battle drawing the boundary lines for Gotham City.
REVIEW:
Since #1, the book started out fine but the series started to become...mixed in my brain. I thought it was either the art turning out to be bad or the story was starting to show its true colors to me as a bad story. Since I went this far, I figured one more shouldn't hurt to get the whole arc completed. Since I should finish what I start, I decided to move on to the final part of this 6-issue arc.
My review is going to be quick. First off, while this was a fitting end, it wasn't a good ending nor a great one, but not a bad one. Just okay. Each issue seemed small in page count and this isn't any different. There were some things that bugged me: Batman mentions that Luthor took "his" machines, which would say that Batman just revealed to Luthor that he is Bruce Wayne. Even though it was a robot, Luthor was controlling it and still knew what was going on. So that was off. Everything was quick-quick-quick to get the story done. The art was bad, and you know what, after the first couple issue it started to become bad. No wonder I was having doubts.
Overall, this issue wasn't that good. I think that once this enters as a trade, no one should buy it unless you are a diehard Batman fan. I also believe that someone should return my money back as I don't want this anymore. My only hope is that the next arc will make up for it. The idea of who the Joker was before he became The Joker sounds interesting. Let's hope it is.
RATING: 1/5
OVERALL ARC RATING: 2/5
Next Issue: Who was the Joker before he became The Joker?

I was reading an Aquaman from a while ago last night (somewhere between issue 40-45) and Dido mentioned how Diggle's Batman story was brilliant. Hhhmm. |
