Ray Besasie, as in the X Cars? They definitely had designs that evoked the idea of a Batmobile, but the one used in the TV series was a customized Lincoln Futura show car. Bill Schmidt, Lincoln/Mercury chief stylist at the time, is the one who designed the car (the actual building was done by Ghia in 1955), and Barris Kustoms is responsible for updating the design from a 1950s show car into a 1960s muscle car. The modifications BK made were pretty straightforward: radiused/flared wheels openings, scalloped fins, forward fin extensions, split grille, hood scoop, removal of the center canopy, and the addition of the miscellaneous bat gadgets (jet exhaust, rocket tubes, radar, parachutes, interior gizmos, etc.).
Though technically Bob Kane (comics) or Fisher Body (Batman serial) could take credit for the first Batmobiles |
