A new section of the site has just been launched, addressing some of the more common rumors and misconceptions about the Batmobile from comics, TV, and movies. You can see the new section here.

If anyone has their own questions about the car in any of its incarnations, either post it here or send me an e-mail for possible future additions to this section.

Very nice.. I don't have the time to read through all of them yet.. but what about the rumor that the 89 Batmobile was a Corvette? I think I mention that in the movies section here.. Might be a nice addon..

I thought the ’89 Batmobile was a Chevy Impala that had the frame stretched. At least that’s what I recall.

Thanks for the suggestion! Yes, it was definitely not a 'Vette, and most likely was an Impala (though the official designation is a "GM chassis", so it could've been any of the B-body cars including the Buick LeSabre, Chevy Caprice, Olds 88, or Pontiac Parisienne..."Impala" probably sounded coolest and was still technically correct).

I had forgotten about that one, but it does still crop up from time to time. I think the confusion came from a combination of an in-process movie car wearing Corvette wheels, and Mark Shields' '78 Corvette conversion.

iggiesmall, thanks - I've traded e-mails with the owner of that site for years, he has some great information there.

Furst/Burton car:
An interview I saw/read? (I'll try to look it up) with the builders said it was 2 Impala chasis that were stretched and modified (to set the engine lower and under Anton Furst's hoodline). It had a fiberglass body and would shake badly at higher speeds (they usually kept it under 45/50). In the scene where Batman takes Vicky to the Batcave, the film is OBVIOUSLY sped up to make the car seem to be moving faster than it actually was.

I assume (always dangerous) that the 2 chassis were for 2 cars, a "Hero" car and a stunt car. Though, it COULD be 2 chassis for 1 car too (for the lengthening and modifications).

I'm out of town right now , but when I get home I will look at my DVD (It may have the interview on there, BUT I know I had it before the DVD Special Ed came out) and my old magazines to see if I can cite the actual article.
I like to cite my sources, when possible.

Your assumption is correct - there were two "Furstmobiles" in the beginning. They're actually different from everything that came after them (even the Batman Returns cars) in that the rear quarters are wider on them.

I read through a couple of pages in the new section, Spencer - it's excellent! I was familiar with a few of those but not all. I might have to develop some sort of general Myths & Legends section for BYTB if I can think of/come across a good amount.
