Batmobile 1989 Wheel Color? |

Guys,
I'm getting ready to build an old AMT/ERTL 1989 Batmobile model. I'm re-watching Batman 1989 on VHS and can't for the life of me tell what color the rims are.
I'm thinking they're bronze colored. Actually, aren't all the unpainted metal parts on the '89 Keaton car bronze/gold?
I know...I should get it on DVD and see for myself. Unfortunately, I can't do that right now. Any help is appreciated. |

I'm pretty sure they're just a dark silver, like unpainted metal. Certain products may have them as bronze or gold, but I think it's safe to say the actual vehicle had unpainted metal. Take a look at some of our (or Spencer's) photos.

Funny you should ask this - I just had someone ask this very question over at ScaleAuto, as part of the Batmobile CBP. In the interest of brevity, I'll just copy & paste what I wrote there 
The details depend on which version of the car you're looking at; there were quite a few changes over the years. The original car from the first movie was satin black with a black intake, black wheels with gold hubs, a black exhaust, and dark raw metal side pieces. The "promo" car used at the time was essentially the same except it had a brighter raw metal intake, exhaust, and wheels. The second movie car was done with the same paint job as the first movie car, but it had new gadgets and slightly narrower rear fenders. When OnStar got in on it, the car was repainted dark gray with matching intake and wheels (still with gold hubs). Then there are the official theme park cars, which are painted gloss black with gloss black intakes and wheels (without the contrasting center hub). Finally, you have "everything else;" which includes everything from fan-built replicas to game skins.

Thanks, Spencer. That explains it! Gold hubs, I knew it! I just need the blasted movie on DVD to see it more clearly. This is a Batman 1989 movie-accurate car, I'm going to attempt to build.
I've been looking at your models, they're great. I really love the low gloss finish of the batmobile, batwing, and most of the stuff from the whole movie, actually.
I'm going to do some experimentation but I'm hopeful that Testor's Gloss Black Enamel followed by Testor's satin or semi-gloss clear lacquer should produce the right black sheen. (I know, you're not supposed to put lacquer over enamel but the Testor's catalog say's it's OK). Thanks. |

Thanks! My '89 was the first Batmobile model I built, probably 15 years ago, and it really shows...I basically did no research for it, and just built & painted it with whatever I felt like using at the time. I think you've got the right idea for the paint job, it should turn out nicely.

I was about to ask about the ACTUAL movie finish on the cars, as they seem to vary between a satin and a glossy. Glad I searched before "new Thread."

May I suggest a thread retitle and sticky:
"Actual 89 Movie Colors" or "Furstmobile's actual colors" or "Accurate tones of Furst's 89 Movie Car"

(I am repainting some 89 cars I got off ebay. They ALL need work, some serious.)

Looking at the pictures I can find . . .
The "dark metal" looks like the Testors "jet exhaust" color. That might be a good shade it use that isn't shiny gold or silver, but a nice blended, dark metallic.
What does everyone else think?

Another question:
The Batman Returns DVD speaks of them pulling out the 2 original cars and "modifying them for the look of the new film."
The chicksdigthecar.com forum seems to say the fender narrowing was done on SOME stunt cars, the Six Flags cars, and the touring/promo cars. This was done to allow them to be just 8 feet wide, for road laws (width limits) and to allow the cars to fit into a standard trailer.

Does anyone know if there were modifications to the 2 original cars, besides the addition of the new "features"/gimmicks seen in the movie (which may not have even been applied on all the cars anyways)?
The car BODIES look substantially the same. The main difference seem to be around the jet intake area and that may be just because of the "engine pulled out" scene.
