I finally got to go see this tonight. At just over 3 hours, it's a lot of entertainment for your money. Rodriguez's Planet Terror is definitely the better of the two movies in this double feature. It gets all the main characters established within 15 minutes, then it never stops rolling until the end. It's gory, but in that great low-budget throwback kinda way. There are some hilariously over-the-top scenes in this movie, from the police deputy getting pulled into four sections by attacking zombies, to the infamous one-legged gogo dancer firing rockets from the machine gun attached to her leg stump. Anyone who likes cheesy horror or sci-fi movies will eat this up, as will anyone who can just enjoy a good tongue-in-cheek action romp. Rodriguez balances all these elements perfectly.

Tarantino's Death Proof, on the other hand, is a movie that manages to deliver solid entertainment once it finally starts going somewhere. The biggest problem is the way the movie is divided in two completely separate sections, each of which has a boring, drawn-out twenty-minute dialogue scene. Now, these are something of a hallmark with a Tarantino flick, but we really get too much of it here. With all the movies Tarantino has under his belt, I'd expect him to know more about pacing than he seems to here. The scenes of Kurt Russell's Stuntman Mike in the first section, as he has his way with the carload of female victims, is really the only time I feel the movie goes too far. It's absolutely brutal, and uncomfortable to watch. That said, I was really surprised to see such a thing in this movie, I was just surprised at how realistic it was. Where Planet Terror had special effects that clearly echoed the low-budget horrorfests of decades past, Death Proof had effects that were far too realistic to fit into the Grindhouse theme comfortably. They're so realistic, they just seem out of place. Once we soldier through the second set of extended dialogue scenes, the movie well and truly gets rolling, and it's an absolute blast from there on out. I'm not gonna spoil anything for people who want to see this, but the ultimate payoff more than makes up for the boring earlier sections of the movie.

The set of trailers for movie that will (almost certainly) never be made are a highlight. Machete is the clear favorite here, and I hope to God the rumors that it might actually be made into a full film turn out to be true. It could easily be a straight-to-DVD flick and recoup its costs. The others are all quite amusing, with Thanksgiving probably taking the silver medal here. The entire package makes Grindhouse more than just a double feature, it's a full-blown cinematioc experience that gives us a glimpse of the kinds of flicks we could have been dragging our dates to a few decades ago. For my part, I'm sorry that this is likely our final opportunity to have such an experience. With all the homogenized cookie-cutter crap we get from Hollywood, it's a rare thing that such a refreshing feature comes our way. It's a damn shame more people aren't taking the opportunity to experience this movie. If you're on the fence about it, go ahead and give it a shot. And do it this week, because with the film's surprisingly low box office, it'll probably be gone come Friday.

............. & not only that, but it now seems there's a high chance this will be released in the UK as 2 separate movies! Which will really **** me off. It's still scheduled to released as a 1 deal trip (1/6/07), but it looks like this might change.

I personally can't wait. To me, Tarantino is the Frank Miller of the movie world; I don't like everything he's done, but the stuff of his I like, I absolutely cherish. And (although this isn't actually his chunk of the deal) I'm really looking forward to the zombie stuff!

That'll be a big blow to the whole Grindhouse experience. With the faux trailers, '70s graphics, and missing reels, it all works together perfectly. Split up, it's just not going to be as enjoyable. unfortunately, it looks like the DVD release will see them split up, too.

Eli Roth's "Thanksgiving" trailer is the most disturbing of them all with a girl jumping on a trampoline preforming a split and no underwear mind you and a knife cuts through it and she lands on it. SICK but also very amusing and the figure walking into a house and grabbing the knife all seen in the killer's point of view is great but a rip off none the less of HALLOWEEN II

I loved Rob Zombies werevolves trailer genetic engenering nazis to create the ultimate soldier very 70's shock picture material indeed hope that one get's made into a movie

Now for the DVD rumors Grindhouse will be released on DVD as a whole not split up the movie's three hours long Titanic is 3hrs and 14 min long and the movie is whole on the first DVD release there just was no special features other than a trailer so expect a two disc or three disc DVD and for collectors they will probably release a box set shaped like the movie theater or something

There is also rumors of a directors cut of the movies probably the "missing frames" will be added in so we see some nudity that's if your're a sex crazed freak and more gore

Now this is all just rumors but wouldn't be sweet if we got 3 different versions of the movies

1. Grindhouse double feature 2-disc
2. Planet Terror
3. Death Proof
4. Grindhouse ultimate edition director's cut 3-disc

This is just what the releases would be like if I was calling the shots but I'm not just a ticked off fan boy because this will probably never be but we can all dream can't we

I read on IGN that the plan is for two separate DVd releases, but hopefully there will also be a release like you said, with the entire thing on it. The Thanksgiving trailer did have several cringe-inducing moments, including the one you mention, and the modifed "turkey" dinner. Sadistically inventive!
My favorite part of "She-Wolves of the SS" was Nicholas Cage as Fu Manchu. Smile That character has a long history of being protrayed by caucasian actors. I would totally see that movie!
