Batman
DC Superheroes: Mattel, 2005. Asst J2003, SKU# J5151

The comic style Batman is back. Just before Christmas the new DC SuperHeroes line of figures hit the pegs. The first four figures, Batman, Bane, Killer Croc and Scarecrow are re-releases from last wave of Comic Style figures that Mattel released overseas. These figures are similar, but have some new features and are not identical to those. This figure is based on Batsignal Batman one of the Deluxe Figures from Wave 6. The only exceptions are that it was been repainted to blue/gray and does not have the ball jointed head or the cloth cape and there is no Batsignal included with the figure.

Essentially this figure is a cross between Zipline Batman and the SDCC Batman figures that were sculpted by The Four Horsemen, only with slightly better articulation. It has a ?Retro Traditional? Gray and Blue look and is similar to the Jim Lee interpretation of Batman.

SPECS:

The figure stands 6.5 inches tall and has 20 points of articulation (head, shoulders, elbows, gloves, wrists, torso, waist, hips, knees and ankles) and the rubber cape that was on the 2004 SDCC ?Unmasked Batman. It also includes three accessories, Grapling Gun, Batarang and Batcuffs that came with the 2003 SDCC Batman. It also includes a comic book, Detective Comics 704, ?Rocket Scientist?

PROS:

It takes Zipline Batman to a whole new level. A dead on classic Comic Book look and good example that Mattel can compete with Marvel Legends in the articulation department, almost. Not many Batman figures can actually touch the Utility Belt with their hands, this one can. The wash job that covers the body and cape adds a new dimension to detail and is not often seen on Mattel?s mass retail figures.

CONS:

The loss of the ball joint head is sad, because this figure seems to stare downward more than Zipline did. While the rubber cape is fine, the cloth ones are almost always better. Zipline and the others before had slightly softer plastic for the gloves, this figure has very soft rubber gloves and hands. Too soft I think, as the wrists will probably let the hands come off easily during play. Those blue pins in the knees make me wonder where Quality Control was on that one. I also wonder if we will see a running change to gray pins later.

(L-R: Zipline Batman, DC SuperHeroes Batman, Attack Armor Batman)

OVERALL:

This is one of the better Batman figures ever released. Added articulation for greater playability makes it a really good value. If you want a figure with more articulation than Zipline Batman, but less than Attack Armor Batman then this is your figure. This figure is a must have for any Batman or action figure collector, and will be even more so if they get rid of those ugly blue pins in the knees.

Nice review. I haven't caught anything left unsaid. Smile

I still don't have this figure, but these photos make me hungry. I'm glad to see the backside of his cape and head in this. I didn't expect them to be so darkened like that, looks nice. The black wash can differ from figure to figure. The only one I've seen at Wal Mart, I keep hiding on the top shelf. I haven't been able to bring myself to buy it yet, as he has some spottiness on his mask. Yours looks pretty good though.

I'd still say this figure has a much more Micheal Turner feel than Jim Lee. The Horsemen weren't really looking to Lee's work for inspiration anyway, but I suppose I can see why people get that idea.

I remember wanting the SDCC '03 figure so bad, but this one pretty much takes him off the map. It's nice to see not only the same classic colors and black wash, but same accessories as well. I too can't stand those blue knee pins...

I don't really like this figure. I never liked the head sculpt on Zipline Batman and I don't like the way Batman is staring downward with this one.

Oh wow, I want this figure so bad. Nice review by the way.

It's getting on my nerves a bit though, my Wal-Mart still didn't have any of the series last time I checked.

All I have found at Walmart is the tag for the figures to be put on, but no figures. I found every other figure in the wave except this one at Target, but I just wasn't amused by them enough to pick them up. I want this one, but mainly to improve it. The head and shoulders looks pretty messed up on this, but I think that that would be pretty easy to fix with some of the parts I have. These Mattel figures are great for customs since they are easy to disassemble.

Could be because of the kids receiving the injurys from the Mattel Batmobile.

What do you mean?

The Batmobile was recalled due to sharp Tail Fins. The "New" Tail Fins were still hard plastic but blunted at the tip.

The plastic in the gloves is much softer than previous figures. My guess is it's cheaper to use, not safer for kids.

I finally found one at Toys R Us. Strange since I don't think I have read about anyone finding these there yet, but if you are having trouble check them out. I found all the figures except the Batman (the only one I wanted), then I checked the top shelves (had to jump) and saw the bottom of a toy. The shelves were empty except for that one. I pulled it down and sure enough it was batman. It really irritates me when people put stuff like that. A kid can't see it, and most people probably won't look there. I bet whoever did it had a nice surprise later that day.

I am glad to report that there seems to have been a running change and they are using grey pins for the knee joints. So if that has been holding you back check the figures in the stores. I really like the figure except for the way the shoulders sit. They just look so hunched over. I may have to see if I can make a custom with one of the old zip-line torsos and make him stand a little better. Other than that the figure loos pretty cool.

Nice to see that they made a running change to gray pins, I had hoped they would. Now, I wonder if the blue pins ones will be a higher value because of that.

It should be pretty cheap at a comic shop, or you might find it on EBay. It is Detective Comics #704. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

Blech. Not only is his costume gray and light blue, which I can't stand, but he looks like a hunchback on steroids.

I have Zipline Batman, and I think it's one of the best Batman figures ever. My only complaint with it is that the belt is a little too bright a yellow.

Perhaps, but they did take the best of Zipline Batman and make it better. The arms with POA at the biceps and elbows are much better. The ankles are a nice addition too.
