101 - MAN OF TOMORROW

PLOT:
When fearsome villains the fatal five set their sights on the newly formed Legion of Super Heroes, three of the Legion's members go back in time to get help from the greatest hero of all time: Superman. Instead they find Clark Kent, aware of his powers but not yet of his grand destiny.

REVIEW:
If there is one team from DC Comics that isn't highly known, it is Legion of Super-Heroes. Teen Titans was also a team that was similar but that got its own series. Twice in the Bruce Timm/Paul Dini created DCAU, the Legion appeared in the Superman: The Animated Series "New Kids in Town" episode which was based on their well known team ups with the teenage Clark as Superboy and again in Justice League Unlimited's "Far from Home" which reflected DC Comics' plan to have Supergirl join the team for their One Year Later time jump. Now, Legion of Super-Heroes finally have a show. And just like what many fans remember of them, the team has Superman as their leader (and the show's star). And now, the first episode....

The plot of this episode was what I expected it to be like. I know that may sound wrong since we knew the plot already. It was just that well; why would they need a legendary hero in their team unless they needed help? In interviews, we were told that this show was to be like Teen Titans & Justice League/Unlimited. From the first episode, we can see the animation style being from TT with the storyline mirroring that of JLU. The characters mix them both with all being serious but some popping a joke or too.

Clark Kent, when he appears, acts the same way as the Clark in Smallville's early seasons. Knows his powers, well most of them, but doesn't know what to do concerning them nor his future as a superpowered being. The recording, despite changing him from Superboy to Superman, must've also added him going to Metropolis as said in this episode's beginning. I believe that must've been Smallville High School or something. His costume is basically the traditional looking Superman costume. What was added was a more darker red, a maroon color, just like the Superman Returns costume. And just what he wore when he was with the Legion in the comics, his belt has the "L" symbol.

The Legion act like what they are, and still what Superman is, as teenagers. Or well, young adults (because of the recording, again, for Supes). They seem to have experience, but still somewhat in the learning curve. As seen when they fight the The Fatal Five, in their second time, and get beaten with Superman coming in to bail them out. Speaking of the Fatal Five, the writers made them a threat. Normally with shows like these, the danger on people like civilians is down to somethign like a slap. Here, the cars behind them explode and knock them out. Thats in shows like JLU, but haven't been seen in saturday morning ones. I guess we're being shown this will be different than Teen Titans and other saturday morning shows despite The Batman.

Overall, this episode sets up Superman as a young adult on the learning curve teaming up with a future superhero team that have experience but need help. I think this show we'll do fine. I enjoyed it and saw it has good writing and animation and characters. This was a good first episode

RATING: 8/10

LOSH-My thoughts:

The show tried to be intelligent...I half expected random skateboard youth idiocy (no offense to the young people here)...I'll give it that, but its way to GENERIC...of course its only the first episode, I'll have to give it time to develope.

PLOT: The Fatal Five wants revenge for being jailed by the LOSH. BORING, TIRED plot...not creative at all. 3/10

Characters: Voice acting and character interaction was decent, but other than Superman, no one really stood out to impress. 5/10

Art: Art does not fit a serious minded show. Teen Titan art is old...not as acceptable as the Jackie Chan art of The Batman. Dissapointing. 4/10

LOSH itself: I'm thrilled someone decided to do a DC related superhero show period, their choice of the LOSH was a good one...now lets see if it evolves into something really special. 9/10

Timeslot: Great, not too early, not too late...everyone should get a chance to see it. Much better than the 8am timeslot The Batman once had. 8/10

OVERALL: I give it a 6/10.

Come on, lets get with it storywise. I don't want to hear the old..."Well this is how it is" argument often heard when a toon first premieres...this is ELSEWORLDS. I have come to grips with that concept finally. There is NO EXCUSE for rotten plots/storylines...they pretty much have free reign to be creative.

I also don't want to hear the "Hey old guy, you are not the target audience for the show" crap either. BTAS/STAS/BB/JLU/The Batman have proven over and over again that it is possible to appeal to both markets (young and not so young).

Lets step it up, folks and make LOSH something we can enjoy past the Timm/Dini era.

i liked it. it's very...actiony and awesome. i didnt think the story had to be good, all it did was introduce the team and superman(superboy). lets wait a little bit. we can say the story sucks if it still sucks after 2nd season.

alot of ppl relate the art to teen titans, but i think its quite different. to me, its like a hybrid of jlu and tt, but with color schemes of superman: tas. everyone is REALLY skinny, so i guess thats a TT thing. but i mean, tucker's work is different from murakami's.

Really?

Story is 75% of the whole package to me.

good example:

I never cared for the Teen Titan art styles. But during the Terra story arc...I found myself so wrapped up in the story, the art really didn't matter to me nearly as much. My bias toward the toon dissapeared...untill the Terra storyline ended and it went back to the randomly stupid psudeo-japanese anime wanna-be nonsense. Episodes like irritating austin powers rip-off guy and playing stink bomb with each others sox and underwear...the series lost me again.

Story is almost everything to me....flashy STAS colors and teen titan hybrids alone ain't gonna get it with me.

(These are personal opinions, mind you...no offense to those of you who like Teen Titans the way it is)

It was a lot better than I thought it would be!! I wish they would have gone with a show about Superman, not Superman-in-training though. How old is Clark suppose to be? They need to stop making the main characters of these cartoons so young, just so kids will like it. My 14-year-old brother thinks that they made Superman too young, and then it will be stupid!! Lol!! Isn't that about the age they try to reach, maybe a little younger. Kids aren't stupid!!

How are they going to make this show last long? They are obviously going to have to bring him back to his own time at the end of the series. And Saturn Girl will probably erase his memory, so he doesn't know his own future.

Despite all my complaining, I will probably still enjoy the show, and watch it every week, because I am a nerd and I have to watch all the comic book shows. Smile

If it was Superboy, he would've been a teenager. But since its Superman, and from the lines in the episode, he's a young adult. So his age must be around late teens, early twenties.
