PLOT:
While supporting Lighting Lad as he competes in the challenging Galactic Games, Superman and Phantom Girl uncover a sinister plot by the Fatal Five! Lightning Lad has troubles of his own when he finds his biggest competition from someone close to him.

REVIEW:
Lightning Lad is the Legion's hot-headed Legionaire. He is eager, prone to his fighting first and thinking later routine, but it seemed that while at first he seems brash, he does seem mostly well intentioned. Something like JL/JLU's Flash; however Flash we saw had heart while Lightning Lad doesn't seem to show that (not yet I hope). Despite all that, like most of the Legionaires, we don't anything about him like his past or who he is beyond what he have seen in him since his debut. Altogether, this season has 3-4 episodes focusing on him, maybe to balance what he really is from what we see him as. This episode, Champions, said in its plot about Lightning Lad having "competition from someone close to him" so lets see if this episode can start giving us more about him.

I gotta hand it to Andy Milder for work as Lignting Lad. He puts in the basic human need for the character as Lightning Lad has this hunger to prove himself. As we could see; despite his superpowers, Lightning Lad's a jock at heart. He needs to win as an athlete and to win clean, as opposed to some of the other contestants. You can clearly feel the sadness when his brother is there to "fix the record" and the hard times he faces when its clear that his brother got away with cheating that even Lightning Lad can't even prove. He does get his medal

The person close to Lightning Lad, that I've already mentioned, that he has to face off in the Intergalactic Games happens to be his brother; Mekt Ranzz, who is also Lightning Lord. This character has two versions: Pre-Zero Hour where he was the founding member of the Legion of Super-Villians and loved his siblings, and Post-Zero Hour where there was no Legion of Super-Villians and he hated his siblings. The version seen in this episode is the Post-Zero Hour version, its as clear as day. This is a character that you want to have Lighnting Lad beat the crap out of because he always upstages his brother and wants to prove he is the best and treat Lightning Lad as trash. When it is learned he made a deal with one of the judges to come in first, and was caught by his brother, it just showed more that he is a jerk.

The Galactic Games mentioned in the episode's plot is actually called the Intergalactic Games. Its basically the 31st-Century version of the Olympics. You have many players representing their planets and the games is what's expected for a futuritic Olympics game. When the Fatal Five attacks, we can see the players are not like Mekt Ranzz and help the three legionaires win the battle.

In this episode, Superman & Phantom Girl met her mother: Winema Wazzo, the president of the galaxy. When we meet her, she's busy and at work as a president always is but she's sweet with her daughter. While Superman hesisates at first since he never met a president before (not yet for him anyway), Phantom Girl has a negetive feeling about her. At first I thought it was because Winema Wazzo thought she was datign Superman, but Phantom Girl acted this way before that comment. Reading her bio from the show, it says she is like a princess that is finally able to be with friends that are like herself. So basically, she doesn't hate her mother, she just doesn't like the royality life. Although many girls have that dream about being a princess, I've seen many stories where it doesn't work out for them and I understand what's going on.

Overall, this episode was another good one. We got to see what are things are like in the future that we have today and we got to see Lighnting Lad more human than what we have been seeing since the first episode, so we can see that he's not always an.....well y'know. The battles and the chases between Superman & Phantom Girl against the Fatal Five were good leading into a the finale. I can see Mekt Ranzz returning and I hope he does. He's someone who shouldn't have just oen appearence.

RATING: 8/10

You don't get it, boy... this isn't a mudhole... it's an operating table.

DULLSVILLE.

Oh great....LOSH's "cliche" episode, designed to teach kiddies not to cheat at sports. Great. Problem is, most kids watch South Park and Adult Swim so much for good sportsmanship and family values.

These type of episodes go back to the days of The Superfriends Wonder Twins hogwash. Good for that time period...not for now.

STAS - "Flash Episode"
Justice League - "War World"
Batman Beyond - "The Winning Edge"

etc...etc...at least in the Batman Beyond episode they shook things up by letting us know what happened to Bane.

I have nothing good to say about this episode of LOSH.

4/10
