LEGION OF SUPERHEROES - 104 - Episode #17: Chained Lightning

PLOT:
Lightning Lad discovers that his sister, Ayla, long thought to be lost in the same Lightning Beast attack that gave him and his brother, Mekt, their powers, is really alive. However, Ayla is now in the form of pure electromagnetic energy. Lightning Lad must find a way to save Alya before Imperiex can harness this energy for his own diabolical use.

REVIEW:
First things first: I did review “Cry Wolf”, but I didn’t post it n \d got rid of it. Why? I have decided to only review the main story arcs for both Legion of Superheroes and The Batman: the Imperiex arc and the Brave and the Bold season. But if you want a quick review of that episode, I kinda disliked “Cry Wolf” because they took the plot for Teen Titans “The Beast Within” and used for that episode. Many have said it reminded them of “In Blackest Night” from Justice League, but that’s actually not true. Now with that out of the way,

In a flashback that is also a dream, when Mekt, Ayla, and Garth were little, monsters attacked them until lightning struck them. That’s how Mekt and Garth got their powers, but Ayla died. In the present, the Legion is in the debriefing concerning the Dominators. Mekt has a similar dream and afterwards, checks out the cannon Impereix got from the Dominators. Garth stars to hear his sister’s voice that gets him freaked. Learning that Impereix joined the Dominators, the Legion fight the villains he recruited where Lighting Lad and Mekt fight and see Ayla in ghost form.

This is the first episode, not to show Garth and his brother and sister younger, but how Garth and Mekt got their powers to become who they are in the show; making it an origin only in the flashback sequence. Mekt appears in a new costume, which made me wonder if he was going to be called Lightning Lord this time, but no. I also thought Garth would get more angry at Mekt when Lightning Lad gets his arm gets replaced with a cyber one, but that was a no again. But more importantly, in the third act of the episode, Mekt decides to do what is right in bringing his and Garth’s sister back from the clouds, and Mekt becomes….a good guy by deciding to go to prison. This change, maybe it should stick.

Overall, this was actually a pretty good episode that had a bit of sadness, but also it had elements from horror films in it from the fact that Ayla as a ghost and her actually being the cloud when the cloud sings the nursery rhyme Garth taught her. The Dominators, one of the Legion’s villains, was mentioned in this episode but they don’t appear. So hopefully they will later so I will make their first animated appearance. This is also the second episode where the original Superman doesn’t appear, just Superman X. So I guess he is the star, because of Impereix on the show, until the original comes back. Also, maybe it was because she wouldn’t literally have a part in the episode and her voice actress played Shrinking Violet, but Saturn Girl doesn’t appear. Reminding myself of that scene in the second part of the premiere, I wonder if she’s……she can’t be dead, right?

RATING: Yay

You don't get it, boy... this isn't a mudhole... it's an operating table.

i like lighting lad's new mechanic arm.

i don't know much about legion of superheroes, but it seems to me that they're just doing w/e they want with the characters to make them cooler. i think that's perfectly fine. i think they're even doing it with TB; as far as i know, firefly never became phosphorus before.

hopefully we'll see batman in legion of superheroes some time soon. heck, if not batman; seeing the titans would be even cooler.

I thought this was a really good episode. Origin story, singing storm, and reconciliation. It was written very nicely. The fact that the storm was singing and it was Lightning Lad's sister creeped me out.

I loved how Mekt changed his ways after realizing Ayla was still alive. I'm really hoping he doesn't go back to being evil. I'd like to see him and Lightning Lad on the same team.

I getting a bit tired of episodes about Lightning Lad's dysfunctional family. Lets move on please.

All in all, it was a mediocre episode.rolleyes

EDIT: Shrinking Violet was pretty sweet.

They did a really good adaption of the comic story for this one. I don't know how Lightning Lad lost his arm in the comics, but I read in a Wizard issue a while back it was with some kind of conflict with his brother. Having the arm full of gadgets was a little lame. Usually you do a story like this to make a character a little more vulnerable, but the arm was such an upgrade that maybe the rest of the Legion should cut off their arms to get all the extra weapons.

It was cool to see the Dominators (they aren't very prominent, but they are controlling Imperiex's ship). Imperiex has really built up a serious alliance to take over the 31st century. Garth Rannzz will probably not be the last casualty in the war.

From WB:

Fans got more than Lightning Lad's back story in the Saturday, October 13 episode of "Legion of Super Heroes" -- they also learned of a new addition to his power: a cybernetic arm. In the episode, entitled "Chained Lightning," Lightning Lad discovered that his sister, Ayla, long thought to be lost in the same Lightning Beast attack that gave him and his brother, Mekt, their powers, is really alive. However, Ayla was actually trapped in the form of pure electromagnetic energy. With the help of the Legion, Lightning Lad was able to save Alya before Imperiex could harness this energy for his own diabolical use.

But before saving Ayla, Lightning Lad had to be saved himself. Lightning Lad's right arm was severely damaged by a blast from Imperiex. Brainiac 5 performed microsurgery (with the help of Shrinking Violet) to give Lightning Lad a cybernetic arm loaded with explosive charges, lasers and, of course, lightning -- all powered and amplified by his own bio-electric energy. As Violet says of his new arm, "It makes things go boom!"

Lightning Lad is voiced by Andy Milder ('Weeds'wink, while James Arnold Taylor (The Boondocks,' 'Star Wars: Clone Wars'wink and Kari Wahlgren ('Ben 10'wink voice Mekt and Ayla, respectively. "Chained Lightning" was directed by Brandon Vietti and written by Matt Wayne.

This Saturday, October 20, "Legion of Super Heroes" will air a repeat of the season premiere's second half: "The Man From the Edge of Tomorrow, Part 2." The episode will air in its customary time at 11:00 a.m. ET/PT as part of the Kids' WB! Lineup on The CW Network. An all-new episode, "The Karate Kid," will premiere on Saturday, October 27.
