LEGION OF SUPER HEROES – 209 – IN THE BEGINNING

PLOT:
While on a mission to rescue the Legion's benefactor, R.J. Brande, our heroes find themselves reminiscing about how the Legion was first created by Brande and its founding members: Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl.

REVIEW:
I made my decision to only review episodes relating to the season’s main storyline: Impereix. But this episode, detailing the Legion’s beginning, felt important to me enough to review it. The Legion’s origin was something that I didn’t really think about when it came down what I would like to see on this show, or this season. But given the fact that everyone has an origin, and it really gives anyone that vibe of “this is how they went from there to here”, there is no point to actually show the team’s origin in any way on this show. So, and maybe because I haven’t reviewed Legion of Super Heroes in a while and the finale is coming soon, let’s look at “In the Beginning”.

As the Legion wins an award, Lightning Lad acts as a nurse toward both Matter-Eater Lad and Saturn Girl. Back at the award ceremony, enemies appeared. Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl arrive, but the enemies escape with Legion benefactor. J. Brande. After failing to trail the ship, Saturn Girl, Lightning Lad, and Cosmic Boy argue with each other. Superman X wonders why they always fight, and Brainiac 5 explains how the met met going back to when they were kids.

First, let me just say that Saturn Girl is in this present (in the present time along with the past also). I’m glad she’s back, because after she was wounded and we didn’t see her since part 2, I thought she was dead. Good thing that she wasn’t, I like her enough not to see her dead. As for this episode; as far as origin stories go, I thought that since the Legion are filled with young adults (or kids) like a college club, starting back when they were around the ages of 10-13 felt right. Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl, and Lightning Lad are all featured because, from the comics, they are the Legion’s founding members. And the connection they all have that all three saved J. Brande, who became the benefactor, and what led to the three becoming friends, and how Superman played the role to them becoming superheroes to begin with, are all explored like origin stories always do.

Overall, this episode did its part of showcasing the Legion’s back-story. The flashback where the origin is told is throughout the episode’s first and second acts. If I go technical, as far as writing and voice acting went, I think the voice acting might have needed a little bit of work. There were times where I got the feeling that, even though this show is family friendly, there were times where I caught it being a little too kid friendly. Maybe it’s just me. I may be praising this episode, but the fact is that it was only okay. It’s job over telling the Legion’s origin was a good job, but not great. I also like to point out that the part of Doyle removing his mask disguise is actually taken from the film “Total Recall”.

RATING: Okay

You don't get it, boy... this isn't a mudhole... it's an operating table.
(crack!)
And I'm the surgeon.
