I found this while doing a search through Wikipedia
Gotham City superhero, Batman, is gay, according to Hollywood superstar George Clooney.
The actor who was being interviewed on an American Oscar show, replied to host Barbara Walters? who asked if he would ever play a gay cowboy. Mr Clooney said he believed he had already played a gay character, "I was in a rubber suit and I had rubber nipples. I could have played Batman straight, but I made him gay."
Fans have debated for years on the sexuality of Bruce Wayne?s alter ego. The oscar nominee played the caped crusader in 1997 film Batman & Robin, directed by Joel Schumacher.
Mr Schumacher has previously been praised by gay groups for giving Clooney and Batman Forever star Val Kilmer pert nipples, tighter buttocks and an extended inflatable codpiece.
Question?s over Batman?s sexuality started in 1954, according to the Daily Star, when psychiatrist Fredric Wertham said Batman's close friendship with Dick Grayson, Robin, was sexual. Mr Wertham said: "Sometimes they are shown on a couch, Bruce reclining and Dick sitting next to him, jacket off, collar open, and his hand on his friend's arm. "Robin is buoyant with energy and devoted to nothing on earth or interplanetary space as much as to Bruce Wayne.?
"They live in sumptuous quarters, with beautiful flowers in large vases."

Anyone who has seen a George Clooney interview knows he often makes flip remarks. It?s hard to take him seriously sometimes. I think he made to remarks as a joke and Barbara Walters took him seriously, or maybe not. I did not see the interview, so who knows.
I do know that George made a comment about playing Batman in his Oscar speech, so he must care more about the character than we think. I still say that Clooney could have been a great Batman had he played the character more serious the way Keaton did and was not saddled with campy dialogue that he had to say in Batman and Robin.
As far as Batman/Bruce Wayne or Robin/Dick Grayson being gay, you'll find that every so often some homophobic moron gets on his soapbox and talks stupid about it.
Batman is NOT gay and I've seen enough Will and Grace to know it! ::yellowrolleyes::

I've known about that other crap for a long time, including Seduction of the Innocent, but this Clooney stuff is idiotic. I overheard that interview in the other room while I was on the computer, and I distinctly remember him making jokes about his role in the 1997 film and the interviewer (Walters, apparently) ask in a funny and lighthearted way "Batman gay?" Clooney replied that no, Batman isn't. He made Batman gay in his portrayl. He was just joking about how silly the movie was and not that he was actually trying to play a homosexual character. By the tone of the interview, this was very obvious. I don't know what kind of idiot would've taken his words as so concrete and serious.
You're right, FlaBat. Back during the hype pre-Batman & Robin, (if you can believe that) Clooney even claimed that he was "a huge fan" of Batman as a kid. I've got several 1997 interviews on tape of him claiming his fandom of the character, so this whole thing is misinterpreted and idiotic and there's really no point in discussing it. I'm going to modify that piece on Wikipedia so it doesn't translate so terribly.
Edit: I just deleted it entirely. It really had no rellevance.

I think that Clooney just really regrets "burying the Bat-franchise" (a phrase that he often uses). People really keep bringing it up. This was probably just made in a joking tone like a lot of stuff he says.

Coming off of From Dusk Till Dawn? Clooney could have and would have made a fierce Batman.
UNFORTUNATELY? the B&R script was rushed and cheesy, there were entirely too many characters added to the mix (Batgirl, Poison Ivy, Bane), and the persona of the various characters were poorly executed.
Batman & Robin was destined for disaster before Clooney even donned the cape and cowl.
I think it?s a matter of pride that keeps Clooney one up over the critics and fans with his continuous bashing of his portrayal of Batman? as if he?s solely to blame for the demise of the previous Batman franchise.

That?s a good point darkdeco. I think Clooney could have been one of the best Batman actors yet. I know he can act better than he did in Batman and Robin and it?s a shame that he gets knocked for killing the franchise when we all know it was Schumacher that killed it.

Guys, I know the thread title was a little misleading, but that's not exactly the point of the thread. It's about Clooney's Batman, not just Batman in general. And boy oh boy some Wikipedia members are idiots. I found myself arguing why the mention on Batman's article should be ommited. Why would those little bastards argue with me on that? They couldn't possible be real fans of Batman. You just want to sock 'em in the mouth.

I had heard the Clooney comment a while ago, but I also just dismissed it as Clooney being flippant about it (as he is with so many other speeches/interviews). I'm with FlaBat: if he had been given more to work with, Clooney could have been excellent in the role. |

I think it's humorous how people are making this a big deal. If he was gay, he's gay. If he isnt, then not. Who cares? |

I don't even care about this sort of thing either. A lot of people think that Superman's gay as well. You just can't argue with these people. They're clearly not fans of either characters and they just like to point out these irrelevant 'facts' to make themselves feel big. As for Clooney's comments, I have great respect for the fact that he recognises that his film sucked. In his defence, he could have gone all out and completely camped up the character, but he didn't, he merely followed the deplorable script. I question whether he'd actually be any good in a serious Batman film, though. His face is too 'kind', unlike Christian Bale, Val Kilmer and Michael Keaton who all have fierce, animalistic expressions on their faces.

Watch 'From Dusk Till Dawn'. Clooney is more fierce in that movie than Val Kilmer would be if he fused with Satan. Kilmer just sucks. Except as Mad Mardigan... ;-)
