Well I like Jim Carrey a lot. I think he pulled of the Riddler rather well. In a way he reminded me of the way Frank Gorshin played the Riddler, although I think Carrey pushed it a little farther.
I like Tommy Lee Jones too. He?s a talented actor who was under used. He would have been a better Two-Face if he could have been more menacing and the film more dark. Keep in mind that DeVito?s Penguin turned a lot of people off and that Batman Forever was made more kid friendly to sell more toys and fast food.
Kilmer struck me as too young for either Batman or Bruce. I think Clooney looked better than Kilmer as both Batman and Wayne, but Kilmer is the better actor. Keaton is still one of the best Batmans so far. Let?s see how Bale holds up in the next movie.

I just realized, both Returns and Forever have a pretty creepy ending. The Penguin's fate used to be a bit much for me when I was younger, then just last time I watched Forever I was a little creeped out by Carrey when he screams in terror, which I don't think used to bother me. Kinda funny.

I thought Carrey was atrociously hammed up in this film. Frank Gorshin was actually creepy to watch, despite his chronic energy. However, Jim Carrey is just too electrified and silly to watch.

I thought Jim Carrey did a decent job, but he works best with a good director. Without someone there to tone him down, he tends to go too wild. I thought he was perfect as Edward, though. He had the arrogance and the flair you'd expect from the Riddler's alter ego.
Tommy Lee Jones was my biggest disappointment. I preferred the more subdued Two-Face with the quiet mean streak. The laughing, the over-the-top delivery, and the wild motions were totally at odds with what I was expecting.
I didn't mind the one-liners either. I thought "holy rusted metal" was a funny nod to the old series. The rest of the pros match my thoughts: no random killing, Bruce Wayne's backstory, Bruce Wayne's current story, Nicole Kidman, and Robin's introduction were all good. |

I still don't get why Two-Face's henchmen wore bondage outfits and used working stovetop coils to make machine guns.
Some really silly things about the ending (besides Two-Face & Riddler Trick-or-Treating and playing Battleship with the entire harbor) were when his thugs ran through Wayne Manor. I wouldn't focus my worry over whether or not Nymga knows my true identity; what about the dozens of men they sent through my home? Then Two-Face continuously flips his coin until it hits Tails so he can do an evil deed. Doesn't seem like much of a slit personality, more of an all-around bad guy who likes to play around with a nonexistant half good-half bad gimmick.

A lot of people may blame the director joel on the flaws. But remember, warner told him to lighten the series up. He directed in that manner because that's what he was told to do. Even B and R there was order from the tops at warner to lighten the series up.
I think the scripts were the worst part, if the scripts wouldnt have the bad liners, etc, batman forever would of been that much better.
Havent got the 2 disc yet but will soon. |

I don't know...I'm still thinking a lot of the problems fell to the director. For example, my first comment above was how Jim Carrey works best under a competent director, and can go too far if he isn't reined in. After all, that's what a director is supposed to be for - directing. But watching the extras on the BF DVD, they pretty much flat-out said that any wild idea Carrey wanted to do was included; Joel didn't even try to say no. |

I agree with you on that, but the problems with the film extended beyond Jim Carrey. "Chicks dig the car?" Under any director that would of sucked. It was in the script. |

Eh, that line never really bothered me. Using that specific example, I think the delivery was a bigger problem than the line itself. Batman has delivered a few one-liners in the comics that worked because he was totally deadpan about them...no one can tell if he's joking or not.
If you read through the original script and/or the novelization, you can see how it could've been better with no script changes, just acting changes. The same is even more true for B&R, but that's another thread. I do agree with you that Joel is not 100% at fault, and one has only to look at Catwoman to see how much WB hates good movies. I just think that the story could've come across much better with someone stronger behind the camera. |

Me and my brothers both agree that Batman Forever is still 1 of the best Batman movies to ever come out, even with some of Joel's influence. I never even knew that the Forever Batman Oval Costume even had nipples, at least until someone pointed it out recently when I read it somewhere(I think it could of actually been this site), and after I saw it on T.V. again, realized that it did had nipples.
I remember many people saying at the time that it was a good Batman movie, at least until Batman And Robin came out, and that's when many started to say Batman Forever was crap. Although, for all I know, some of them could of gotten confused with the 2, since they were both directed by Joel, and they both even seem to be the same basic script, like they just took the basic Batman Forever's script, did some changes with stuff like cast, events, replace Batgirl with Robin as the new crime fighter character, with more cheesy lines and making it more campy.
Never really had too much of a problem with the "Chicks dig the car" line, even to this day, however I think it would of work better with Bruce than Batman. Tommy Lee Jones I think could of done a cool Two-Face if it was more serious, but at last, he was too campy, and when you compare to BTAS, it just seems too wrong for the character to act like that in the movie. Jim Carry did an ok job as The Riddler, but I just think the movie should of used the verison that was more like BTAS than 1960's T.V. Riddler. Chris O Donall I think played a good Dick Grayson/Robin in this movie, however it was too bad that in Batman And Robin, his character was more like a little brat in a 20 year old body if anything else. Me and my brothers defently like Val Kimler's take on Bruce Wayne/Batman. Although Keaton and Bale will defently be Batman when I think of them, Val's is my personal favourite for some strange reason(Course that may change once I see Begins and Dark Knight). Nicole Kidman's Dr. Chase is probably the sexist female lead character in a Batman movie, next to Michelle Prifer's Catwoman in Returns of course. Sugar and Spice were okay I guess.
From the orginal Batman movies(1989 Batman-Batman And Robin), I've always have a hard time choosing between 1989 Batman and Batman Forver as my #1 favourite(Both 5/5, with Returns as 3rd(4/5. I like the movie, but it at times seem too strange and dark for my tastes), and Batman And Robin last(I've been kind enough to give it a 2/5 thought, but that could be because I'm a nice guy. And 1 of those points is really only because I thought Alicia Silverstone played a good Batgirl, which probably was the only reason why I even watched the movie in the 1st place on T.V.). Haven't seen Begins yet, but from what I've seen and heard, it does sound like probably the best Batman movie to date. But Forever is defently 1 of my all time favourtie Bat films. |

Before the absolute perfection of Batman Begins, Forever was my favorite. I thought it was a great balance between Bruce Wayne and Batman. I was about 12 at the time I saw the movie so the Bat-nipples and sex-fetish thugs didn't concern me. All that mattered was how Batman was portrayed. For a while, I thought Val Kilmer was the best actor and was angry when he wasn't returning to do Batman & Robin. I didn't care for Two-Face but I clearly remember being so uncomfortable with Jim Carrey playing a villian. To me, it wasn't right but I got over it and enjoyed his take on the Riddler.
So if I list the movies from best to worst
Batman Begins
Batman Forever
Batman
Batman Returns
Batman & Robin |

I remember when this came out in '95, as soon as I realized that Batman had a diff. actor I couldn't watch it, I just didn't understand what was going on. After that I saw some of the figures and I realized that the good times were over. However, the good times were back when Begins came out and I laid eyes on the Tumbler at K-mart!!!

Pros: I enjoyed it as a kid, there are some good jokes, and if you take out the neon and nipples you'll find that most of the props were well made.
Cons: Val Kilmer was just about as wooden as they come in this movie; I know a lot of people liked his performance but only about 10% of it is Kilmer's talent, and the rest is really just the script writters.
Two-dimensional characters, neon and nipples, and a lot of bad jokes and Repetitive sound track.
But in the grand scheme of things, Forever is more of a positive force than evil.
Never start with the head; the victim gets all fuzzy!
