http://www.batmanytb.com/movies/batmanreturns/index.php

The first draft for BATMAN II was finished in 1990. The plot: Catwoman and the Penguin would frame Batman, turning the poilce, and Gotham against him and Vicki Vale would be rescued by an acrobatic street kid named Dick. The script was thrown away and a new one was made. The New script did in fact have the two villians framing Batman, but now there was now Vicki Vale. Batman, however, was the one that was assited by a street kid named Dick, who had an "R" on his over alls. Annette Bening was cast as Catwoman, but had to drop out due to pregnancy. Sean Young, Who was first cast as Vicki Vale in BATMAN, was a little miffed that she was not chosen to play Catwoman, show up at the WB lot dreesed in a home made outfit. Burton quickly got Michelle Pfeiffer into the role. For the Penguin the choice wasn't hard. Even before the script for BATMAN RETURNS was done, fans knew that Danny Devito was going to be the short, bird like villian. The film was almost set. Again, just as it had happened for BATMAN, The part of Robin was dropped. WB denied that the part was even in there, but cast sheets had the part being played by Marlon Wayans.

As for the figure, Kenner knew there was going to be a Robin, so they made the figure, but then Warner dropped Robin from the film, Kenner decided to go ahead and release the figure.

The figure looks just like any Tim Drake figure. It doesn't look adapted for movies in any way, which was a little disappointing for me, when I saw it first. I know a lot of people would like to see the Bat family wearing their comic accurate suits in the movies, but I quite like the way they're changed (like making the Batsuit all-black, and incorporating some Nightwing aspects into the Robin suit for example).

The skin tone on the Returns Robin figure is darker than that on the other figures, and the flat top hair make it actually look a little like it was based on Marlon Wayans. I read the early Returns script (I think I found it on Batman on Film.com) that included the scene where Vicki is rescued by the kid in the overalls with the R on them. That had a pretty different story than what was on the film.

I need to get the se movies. I really want to watch the features. That and they'll look better on the shelf with Begins.

The hair reflected the style of Tim Drake in the comics at the time. He had that "flattop" look with the curls on the side.
It's also my understanding that Will Smith was also considered for the Robin role, but I think that was for Batman Forever. Either way, WB initially wanted to change the status quo of the Batman mythos. The 90's was the decade of the birth of everything being "PC" and Batman's entire cast is white. It was cause for concern, that the general public would view this as some sort of statement. Making Robin black, would bring in another demographic. Sounds lame but I know executives and this is how they think.

HERE is the early Batman II script by Sam Hamm (writer of the first movie's script). It is a decent read. I did a word search and found the scene where Dick rescues Vicki, but I didn't find the part about the overalls with the R, I may have combined a few things in my mind. Nothing unusual there.

Robin was also supposed to be in the first one. In a early script at least. For those who have the 2 disc special edition, "Batman" released last year, go to the second disc. In it, there's the "Robin Sequence" that shows a storyboard along with voice accompiment by the joker and batman from the animated series.
