A thread to post your favourite shot, scene or even just aspect of Batman 89. My favourite shot in the whole movie (and in any of the movies up to Begins) is in the Axis Chemicals scene where Batman descends towards a duo of gangsters and captures one of them with his grapple gun.

Gotta agree with a Westward. Although Batman Begins is without a doubt the best Batman flick to date, it hasn't drained any of my appreciation or respect for the original Batman.

The most glaring downside to the film compared with Begins would of course be that the origin depth only goes as far as the Waynes' muderer. But this could be, for the most part, due to the fact that Keaton's Batman wasn't much more than an intelligent, partially martial trained 'mortal', who relies a lot more on his armored suit and gadgets in his split-psyched drive to defend Gotham City. That's how he was always depicted by Tim Burton, so it leads me to believe this Bruce Wayne wouldn't have had quite as much training as Bale's.

I think the minimal focus on Batman's origin was a big reason for the film to be focused just as much on the villian, The Joker as it was Batman (like most Batman films that would follow). But Nicholson's performance was so goofy and creepy at the same time that that didn't seem to matter much. As the essential Batman movie, it doesn't quite hold up. But I think in its own right, it was, and always will be a great film.

This is my favorite Batman movie. I like all the scenes with Joker but my favorite is when Joker first approaches Grissom and shoots him. Joker is coming out of the shadows slowly and his face is kind of obscured then he comes into the light. And starts dancing and twisting as he shoots Grissom.
Yes, Batman Begins is better as a Batman movie. But for sheer cinematic pleasure, I get more out of the 89' Batman.

I liked the scene of Batman & Vicki going to the cave; it was great to see the the very surreal, almost creepy "Tim Burton" forest, and the music worked perfectly there.

my favorite batman movie leading to begins had to be returns, even though, lets face it... its extremely flawed! i mean cmon catwomans whip didnt even touch the manequins heads and how are we supposed to believe that a man can punch through THE BATMOBILE! its a heaping mass of muscle! but theres so many awesome scenes in it that make me almost forgive burton. catwoman going nuts in her apartment was one of the coolest scenes and the batmobile if u ask me is cooler than begins batmobile. so id have to go with returns

I have so many good memories of Batman '89. I remember going to the theater with my best friend and we entering our Senior year in high school. Batmania was running wild. the summer of 1989 was great and on Friday, June 23rd, 1989 made it more special. I got the VHS and I know I watched it at least 50 times!
Next to Batman Begins my favorate Batman movie ever.

Michael Keaton was Batman. When watching the trailer and watching the movie Clean and Sober, Tim Burton convinced me that Michael Keaton was indeed Batman. Keaton nailed the role and was a good Bruce Wayne as well.

Jack Nicholson as The Joker. Nuff said He nailed it. Casting was too perfect.

Kim Basinger was good as Vicki Vale, the photojournalist who loves Bruce Wayne and wants to find out about the Batman.

Other cast members... Michael Gough was great as Alfred and actually was the backbone of the 4 films. Gough never disappointed me. Jack Palance as Carl Grissom was good. Pat Hingle as Commissioner Gordon was okay in 1989 , but later just lost it for me.
Billy Dee Williams was a good DA Harvey Dent. It was interesting they cast him as Harvey was white in the comics, but that doesn't matter it was a good change. I didn't mind Harvey being black. It was actually being told in 1989 and told by Williams himself on the old Arsenio Hall Show that he would come back in the sequel doing "something interesting" refering I am sure that Dent would become Two-Face. I actually heard that at one point even before the recent Goyer interview on the Begins sequel, That the Joker would have made Dent into Two-Face. I would have liked to have seen Williams portray Two-Face and I know he could have done agood job.

Tim Burton did an excellent job directing. Anton Furst Gotham City design was phenomenal! Danny Elfman's music was awesome!

Anyway Batman 89 was great and that is my favorate Batman film of the previous franchise.

Hugo!:confused???::

just gotta say one thing. Nicholson as Joker, great!

but why was his hair sometimes brown!

it was only ever green when he had his make up on. he got dropped into a vat of acid, surely his hair would be permanantly green.

its like if u get too much chlorine on ya hair, goes green.

i never understood why they did that! i mean what did the Joker do, dye his hair atleast twice a day

I didn't get the makeup/hair color thing right away when I saw this as a kid. The Joker's skin is white, his hair green. When he hosted the conference of all the organized crime bosses, I suppose he wasn't ready to make his Joker persona public just yet. So, he dyed his hair and wore flesh-colored makeup, which he begins wiping off at the end of the scene. Ditto for the scene where he meets Vale in the museum.

Anyway, I've loved this movie since it was released. I was 10 at the time, and it made an indelible impression on me. I remember that, soon after, the comics began incorporating the incredible designs of Anton Furst into the comics, which I felt was a great move. This lasted until Gotham was destroyed by the quake in '98. Even though I think the tumbler is the best Batmobile ever, I still think the '89 Batmobile is the best-looking. At the time, it edged out James Bond's Aston Martin DB5 to become my favorite car of all time. Danny Elfman's score is phenomenal. My favorite pieces are the main theme, obviously, and "Descent into Mystery," which plays as Batman, with Vicki Vale riding shotgun, enter the cave. This was the very first album I ever bought that was nothing but orchestral music, with no vocals.
Keaton was good. Even at the time I didn't buy him as Bruce Wayne-- he just didn't have the right look, and outside of the costume, he was way to small-- but once he put the suit on, he looked great. He did very well with the Batman persona.
But the crown jewel of this film has to be Nicholson's Joker. I won't rehash all the reasons why, since I don't want to be here typing all night. Suffice to say, Nicholson is an acting genius, and he does the Dark Knight's nemesis proud.

The two main negatives about this movie:
-I hate Prince. H.A.T.E.
-The fight scenes are on the pathetic side.

But in the end, that's like finding two minor scratches on the face of a gigantic diamond. It may have one or two flaws, but dammit, it's still a diamond! Smile

I find it hard to sometimes belive that anyone will be able to top Nicholson's Joker. If Nolan is able to find a guy that can play a better Joker, then I will truly respect him for everything.
(Hey, Begins is one movie. Burton did two. So Im gonna hold Burton for his movies, though they are great, and wait and see what the next movie is)

I don't think we need a "better" Joker - as long as whoever plays him makes the Joker his own character, and doesn't try to do an exact copy of earlier performances. After all, Mark Hamill was an amazing Joker, and pretty different from Nicholson.

Yeah. Honestly, I'm not really imagining the next Joker to do it just like Nicholson. And Nicholson's Joker isn't the #1 ideal Joker to me anyway, it was his own. Besides, he was a much older Joker than that from the comics.

although I really, REALLY loved Nicholson as the Joker, I remeber reading Tim Curry and Donald Sutherland were also mentioned in meetings at WB for the role as Joker. It would have been interesting to see how they would have done those scenes had Jack passed on playing the Joker.

I think my favourite part is when Batman releases the balloons and flies up in front of the full moon and then swoops back down. That shot of the Joker in the targeting system, the missles and bullets tearing up the sidewalk, the Joker shooting down the Batwing, all of it. One of my all-time favourite movie scenes.

Also when Batman fights the big black guy in the cathedral, leading up to the fight with the Joker(which is easily one of the awesomest beatdowns in cinematic history).

Plus, it has my favourite Batmobile.

Best Batman Scenes:

- Portrayal of Batmans self introduction was best expressed in 89 and Begins based on these quotes- "Thug: WHAT ARE YOU?!!! :uhoh: ", "I`m BATMAN :sigh: ".
"Falcone: what the hell are you?!!! :uhoh: ", "I`M BATMAN! " ...pretty much the same thing, but truely the best!

- Batman 89, when he breaks through the cealing of the museum and saves Vikki Vale because its totally unexpected first time its seen!
- Batman Returns, As the penguins push their father like deformed Oswald into the water as he dies...its really sad but it was nice to see.
- Batman Forever, Robin saves Batman in the subway.
- Batman and Robin, the shot of Batgirl suiting up!!!
- Batman Begins- Lt. Gordon "I never said Thank You."
Batman "...and you`ll never have to!"

"Look, I never wanted this for myself...but I wanted Batman and Robin back together the way they should be. And if Dick won`t become Robin again...Someone else has to!" - Tim Drake, A LONELY PLACE OF DYING Chapter five: Rebirth
