I pretty much swore off DC Direct figures over a year ago, once I got fed up with overpriced figures with lousy articulation and paint apps, which would often have pieces break off right in the box. Despite that, I picked up 3 of the newest S/B series on impulse today. I've liked the McGuinness based figures from the beginning, although I passed on the earlier waves. Their stout, overmuscled designs and extensive part reuse reminded me of the classic Masters of the Universe line, which is my all-time favorite. Still, it was just made up of reiterations of characters I already had figures of, so it was pretty easy to pass on them.
Well, today I took my nephew to the comic store for a visit and saw the newest wave. The same bulky, MOTU-esque look, but characters that, for the most part, haven't been done ad nauseum! I couldn't resist picking up Batwoman, Batzarro, and Batman Beyond.
The sculpts are great, very accurate to the art. The story was nothing worth reading, but it was nice to look at. These sculpt capture that appeal perfectly, not surprisingly since one of DCD's few strengths is strong sculpting. Batman Beyond is a character I've wanted a comic-style figure of for a long, long time. I was a littrle disappointed when I first saw the sculpt, as it is much bulkier than the character is supposed to be. That's just McGuiness's style though, and it looks great in person. The figure looks so much better than the photos make it out to be, it's really surprising. Batzarro is winner too, with a great facial expression. He has real metal chains hanging from his back, and little details like the upside-down utility belt really make him shine. Batwoman is awesome, a great design that is perfectly realized in three dimensions. The black parts of the costume have a nice glossy finish, neatly contrasting the other parts of the cotume. Articulation is adequate. Ball-jointed heads are something I always like, and I was disappointed to see that these figures don't have them. I still feel like I paid about $5 too much per figure, but I couldn't really pass on them once I saw them in the store. I'm pretty satisfied with them overall. They're all great, I really can't pick a favorite. If I have the chance, I'll take some photos and post them later.

Those are the three I want to get.. however I don't like the look of these, I love my old MOTU figures, but these are jst weird looking.. Big Bodies and small arms. but, again, when I am able to,, these three will be the ones I get..

Just watch the ears when you pick 'em out. I saw several of the Bat characters whose ears had excess plastic on the sides of them. One of the Batzarros had that, so I got one that was okay. My Batwoman has it on her right ear, but she was the only one left, so I got her and fixed it myself. I just sliced it off very carefully, then painted over the little gray spot that was left afterward. I haven't seen any Batman Beyonds that have this problem.

I picked up the whole set. The ears on some of the figures are bent in the tray because of the way the tray is designed, but it’s easy enough the fix them.
Nice to see DC Direct do a Batman Beyond figure even though this one seems a bit bulkier than the character is normally drawn.

I want to get Batzarro and Batwoman, they both look great. I've also wanted a comic-style Beyond figure for a while now, but this isn't it for me. I just can't get past the excess bulk.

I can't say I'm overly impressed with any of those figures....

You might want to look at one in person at least, before you pass on it for good. I didn't like it from the photos, but it looks so much better in person. He's still too bulky, but it seems like he carries it better than the pics show. My nephew just pretends it's Bruce when he wore that costume for a while, to rationalize why he's bigger. I told him he can also act like it's Terry when he's fully grown and added some muscle mass. Unfortunately, it's probably the only BB figure we'll get for a long time, if ever again.

That's a great way of looking at it, I hadn't thought about that.
If I ever get around to my "custom figure" pile, I actually have an idea for a Terry Batman that I think will work perfectly.

I see people saying they've been wanting a comic book styled Batman Beyond and that this is their chance. But while technically this version is one, I have a hard time consider a pure, comic book figure. The McGuinness style is just so simplified and unique from what you get in the typical DC Direct or comic styled figure. It's in its own realm, and I doubt it could blend in very well with other comic figures.
I don't own any McGuinness figures yet, but if I do, I'll probably want at least a small bundle to have them displayed together. This series of Superman/Batman features some odd characters , which might be a neat set to have with the basic McGuinness Batman and Superman.

The only thing I find odd is why all the male arms, legs and torsos are all the same size and shape. While it’s not an exact reuse of the basic body parts there is almost no differences between them except gloves, boots, and chest logos. There should have been more differences between the size and shape of the bodies to make it a bit more realistic if you ask me.

It's just a lot cheaper to reuse or retool an existing mold than to make a new one. Oddly, this cost-saving measure is one of the reasons I like this line, the extensive reuse and bulky, stout build reminds me of the classic MOTU line. If these guys were in a 5-inch scale, they'd fit right in.

the only thing thats got me down about the Beyond figure..is that in this story arc.
he's not Terry McGinnis.
in the comic, he's refered to as "Tim"..which the writers said was a typo..but then on the back of the box it says "Tim Drake"
grr. |

I thought that someone had posted that it was a typo in the comic and that it was supposed to be Terry and not Tim. I guessed that they were going to fix it in the trade. I don't remember when or who though. Maybe I misunderstood.

guess what. they didnt.
and on the back of the card for the figure, it says "Tim Drake"..so maybe DC decided "Screw it..." and keep it Tim. it'd suck if they did |

That sucks. I wanted Terry to be acknowledged in the DC Universe. |
