Mattel Comic Style Batman Figures 2003 to 2005

Mattel picked up the Batman license in 2003 and here’s a look at some of the first figures they made.

Mattel Comic Domestic Figures (Wave 1, 2 and 3)

With the first three waves of Batman Variants fast becoming Peg Warmers, Mattel sent the last three waves of figures to overseas markets. They are some of the hardest to find and coolest figures they made.

Mattel Comic Overseas Figures (Wave 4, 5 and 6)

There are actually 3 of the overseas figures I never was able to get. I got some from a fellow collector in Australia and others from a online store in Italy, but three still elude me to this day

Just for fun can anybody tell me which 3 are missing from the second picture?

I think Zipline Batman was awesome, and is still the standard I judge other Batman figures by. What are your thoughts on the series, post them here

In the first pic, the three Batman in the front are the definitive figures. I want the classic look Batman figure with the blue underwear.

You're missing the Bat-signal Batman. I know thats one.

wow! you have like all of them! I too was collecting the whole line myself but I gave them all away for space in my room and lost of desire of having a complete Batman collection which was never going to happen anyway.
I just kept the bad guys and zipline, Batsignal and battle armor Batman and the few exclusives.
Love the pics and the collection!
so do you have every fig from the line?

do you think DC Universe Batman is a step up or down from S3 Batman?

I have all but three from the Mattel Comic Style series, all three were in the overseas figures series and I may never get them. I’ll post answers later.

I like the DCU Batman but I like Batman from DC Super Heroes: Series 8: S3 Select Sculpt Series the best.

He has a Utility Belt more like Zipline Batman, but retains all the articulation from the DC Super Heroes: Series 3: S3 Select Sculpt Series Batman figure and he’s black and gray.

Is a good figure too, and I like the Jim Lee inspired look to the figure.

The new DCU Batman has better chest joint, but I don’t like or see the need for wrist articulation when most Batman figures do the whole glove, and I don’t like the shorter cape. It’s a step up in some ways, but more of a lateral step in figure terms.

BornAgainBatman, I liked your head swap so much I opened my two extra figures and did it myself.

But I’m sorry this Thread is about discussing Mattel’s Comic Style series not, what is the best Batman figure.

I guess we could add DC SuperHeroes to the mix too as they used many of the same figures and were a nice continuation of the line.

DC SuperHeroes (Wave 1 –8)

Again I’m missing 3 figures, 2 of which I saw, but did not buy.

Bazooka BATMAN and Shield Strike BATMAN from wave 4 and Acid Arsenal BATMAN are the 3 6” figures I’m missing. I also never got the 12” all Black version and while I do have a Blue and Gray one, it’s not on display yet.

DCSH figures I’m missing are Supergirl and Superman with the red/black “S” I just did not like them. I’m also missing Cyborg Superman which I never saw at Retail.

Great head swap!
I wish there was a easy way to swap the belts!

Mattel did a great job on giving us some cool Figs in DCSH.

Whats the deal with Knight Shadow Batman?
Was he ever in the comics?
I have to say he is a must have fig in the DCSH line.

No, I don’t think Knight Shadow Batman was ever in the Comic Books. I wish there were an easy way to swap Utility Belts too, but that destroys the figure most of the time. Even head swaps can be tricky I swapped Batgirl heads on the two figures in The Batman series but due to the “T” post I could never get the head to stay on. I could have glued it, but left it loose so I could rotate it.

DCSH did have some nice figures, but Mattel killed the line with way too many repaints. This is probably why the new DC Universe series is off to a slow start. In DCSH we had 2 Bane, 2 Batman, 2 Bizarro 2 Darkseid, 2 Doomsday, 2 Mr. Freeze (although I never saw him on the purple card back) 2 Supergirl and 2 Superman. Among them were 10 reused figures from the original Comic Style Bane, Batman (Series 1), Bruce Wayne-to-BATMAN, The Joker, Killer Croc, Mr. Freeze, Nightwing, Robin, Scarecrow, Superman (Series 4).
