Well BAB, it all depends on what you buy them for. Do you buy them to admire their sculpting, articulation, action features, or other work put into them? Do you buy them for a display of some sort, and if so, what is the nature of this display? Or do you buy them as a future investment? We can start with these questions and work from there. As for the lack of space, perhaps that should be answered a bit futher down the line.
On the topic of your personal collection, have you just started buying Batman figures very recently? From your posts, I get the impression that you've started getting into it within the past few weeks.

Yes!
i am a new batman collector! Happy to be one too
I was collecting Transformers(well only Optimus prime for about 7 years) and i have a misb and a loose collection. It took up all my space. i do look forward to selling most of my primes very soon.
Now with batman.
i want to display them but i am also that person who perfers Misb away from human touch.... i really dont know what to do.
i spend about a little over 2,000 bucks already on batman in the last 3 weeks. (a christmas gift to myself )
As in why i buy them?
I do admire them at the same time i like to display them.
thing is i been spending my money on action figures that i have not brought a glass display case
i need to that
so i dont know what to do.
with batman i dont look forward to selling them, its more of for me and only for me
so thats why i need you guys to let me know whats you think. |

I open everything. Even when I had a friend in the UK snag me a set of the rare overseas-only Mattel Batman figures, I opened them immediately. When I get an old Batman figure, if it's still in the package, I open it. Every so often I'll like the way something looks in the package, and on those rare occasions I'll pick up an extra to display that way. (That pretty much applies only to my Masters of the Universe stuff, though.)
But, that's just me. I like to pose these things and display them however I want. If you prefer to keep 'em in the package, there's not a thing wrong with that.

I could and probably will write a large essay on the concept of opening and not opening merchandise, but I personally open just about everything. I have a few items that look nice still packaged, like some pewter statues with their COA framed inside, but I may open them eventually, too. However, if I ever got an old 1966 toy still carded (highly doubtful), I'd probably keep it sealed. I've been wanting some glass cases for all my items. A vent goes directly into my room from the wood stove, so needless to say, it gets very dusty.
If you're having troubles with display space, and most of your items are packaged, you may be surprised at how much room is made by opening and truly displaying them. I'm currently in a huge spacial predicament with figures laying all over the place, both carded and uncarded. I plan on opening all of them; I just need to figure out how and where they will be displayed. In the process, I need to do some major cleaning. A massive collection can get way out of hand if you don't tend to it enough or lack the proper space.

I'm not too concerned with " collector value" but I admit that I'm not sure I could bring myself to open a Mego or Super Powers Collection Batman. My brother, however, would open every and anything. I agree about the original MOTU; the vehicle and playset packaging had some of the most beautiful art with their various paintings - quite possibly my all-time favorite of any action figures.

I like to open and display them. I'm a recently started Batman collector too. I've thought about leaving my DCD Batman figures in the box but the urge to take it out is too tempting. |

DCD sucks. Most won't stand on their own or on the stand.

i really need a dispaly case too
i have a lucky draw prime that cost me over 4000 bucks and it just in a box where no one can see it stuff like that needs to be shown off

I'm also of the "open them" group. The only things I keep packaged are Hot Wheels cars, and that's because I like seeing how the designs progressed over the years...plus they're a heckuva lot easier to dust in blister packs.

That's the one exception: I got a "New Years' Convoy" when they first came out, and he is still MISB. I really thought the overall package looked cool, and it doesn't take up much more space than the figure itself would. However, my original G1 Prime, along with half a dozen newer ones (and the rest of the TF collection), are all free of their packaging.

I haven't had too much trouble with my DCD. The only one that was kind of annoying was the Hush Batman. My other two Batman figures, the Unmasked and Reactivated had no trouble standing. |

I have alot of batman action figures and I haven't opened any. Except for anything I have from when I was little. But the boxes take up way too much space. I'm trying to decide whether or not to open some of them, like my S3 dc super heroes figures. I don't know...

If I had space to display stuff, I'd open everything.
Space is a problem, unless you open stuff and throw the packaing away, you can't win! At this time, 75% of my stuff is still in boxes, but thats because I've not got anywhere to display it. If I did have, It would be out and shown off, no question..........
All 20+ 1/43rd Corgi Batmobiles are still boxed (even the golden/silver/bronze sets that could easily be displayed are tucked away). I've got 300+ Star Wars figures, mainly all still carded (except for the ones I've bought that are loose). Then there's Dr Who, again all still in boxes.
The only things that I've currently got open and shown are the larger Corgi items & the 1 Hot Wheels item I own.
In my dreams, I own a huge flat in Central to SouthWest London, with 2 rooms set aside for solely for toys - in one room I've got a train set with green hills, a level crossing, bridges and viaducts and stuff; you have to climb under it and sit in the middle to control it all........ In the other room, Batman meets Star Wars in all my boyhood fantasies. The Doctor is dotted throughout the rest of my wonderful home (problem is I'm 38 & still not quite got there.....) |

A few wise words?.
First: Location, Location, Location. Determine how much space you have and find a way to maximize it BEFORE you get too many action figures. This shows what happens when you don?t have a Master Plan and build as you go.

I added display space as I needed it so I ended up starting with really nice wood bookcases to match the desk?

then switched to glass shelves on the wall to cram more into tighter spaces?

then wood shelves on the walls to add to the bookcases?

even some small rolling printer cart type tables I got off my parents?

and lastly plastic standing shelves in the middle of the room, because I ran low on funds.
So plan accordingly.

Second: To Open Or Not To Open. Almost all of my figures up to 2003 were opened and put on display. In 2003 we redid the floors and I ran out of money to redo the room the way I wanted to do it, so most figures I got after 2003 are still MOC or MIB. Once the room is redone, this year I hope, they will almost all be out of the package. Some of my more rare figures will stay boxed and maybe some of the more common ones to just to show off the packaging as well as the figures.

Third: Dust Is The Enemy. I have the dubious distinction of having a Hurricane wipe out the room too, but dust is the thing I hate most. I?ve yet to find a good way to keep it out, but my next set of cases will have glass doors on them which I will try to seal with some thin foam on the frame to help keep dust out.

Good Luck and please show us what you do.

damn thats alot of toys!!! as for me i open my figures, but after i finish "playing" with them, i put them back in their packages. what does thats make me? a collector or a player of toys? the hard part about collecting is two things: money and the space. money is money but its hard to but these when your paycheck don't cover much these days and can't halp but to buy these great figures, i have all my batman toys from 1998 and now (i had the older batman figs like the 1989 batman and so on but i kind of broke some them and lost some so no classics here), anyways and i cramp them in my closet which is big kind of like a medium size walk-in closet but im runing out of room here and i have about 4 to 5 batman figs coming this year and now im thinking of doing that whole "opening the figs and display them for space", but i don't like to throw a way the packages so im thinking of putting the packages in storage so in case i have to move i can just put them back. what do you think?

For a lot of us, it's not a matter of opening them simply for space; we want to take them out and admire them. If you've got a big display of items all sealed in boxes or other packaging, it starts looking like a retail store. You might as well get a cash register and put a "Yes, we're open!" sign on the door.
Keeping packages for future storage/transportation may be smart, but if you make some careful placement of your figures in a bin or box and use some cushiony fabric or what-have-you (I use my old California Raisin bedsheets) between rows, that can also be effective. The placement and cushioning is very important though. I've have a bundle of figures sitting in a hamper for months and now have some Batman figures with bent ears and accessories. Most of them should be fixable, but I was certainly upset with my carelessness.
I do save parts of my figure packaging like the back and sides of DCD boxes that feature nice photos and art. I figured I could use them in my displays, but most of the time I don't. At least I can keep them for reference anyway.
Ya know, I think everytime I look at FlaBat's photos, I see something new. That RoboCop in the last one looks pretty cool. I've acquired a couple of them over the years myself. In a way, that super-cramped display looks fascinating, but I'm trying to avoid anything that in my current planning - a bit more organized and presentable maybe. It's very difficult to accomplish.

I understand not wanting to get rid of the packages, sometimes I like to keep them if I like the look. In those cases, I keep one of the packages from a figure line so I'll have a "representative" of it, and throw the rest away. It's a compromise, but it works for me.
Exception: I have a stack of Masters of the Universe cardbacks thick enough to stuff a mattress.

All the way1 They're my favorite, without a doubt. As much as I liked most of the 2002 MOTU stuff, I was very disappointed with the packaging. Instead of the awesome painted art of the classic line, we got retouched photos of the toys. :| Even when some of the later packages switched to painted art, it just wasn't nearly the same level of quality.
The classic MOTU packaging just can't be topped, though, as far as I;m concerned. Here's one of my favorites.

Flabat - I don't know WHAT to say. That's brilliant!
Although big on Batmobiles (at least that's what I thought, I've got 43 - just counted - but Marcus' recent pictures kind of put that into perspective!), I've never really moved wholeheartedly into collecting Batman figures. Like most of us I suspect, there's only so much I can afford. Add comics, trades, CDs and DVDs (and those horrid things called BILLS) into the equation.........
For figures I've just stuck to Star Wars (and to a lesser extent Dr Who). I'd love a room where I could I put the whole lot out for anyone to see! And those pictures just make me want that even more!
Wicked stuff!
