i was watching CNN Business news and saw that TRUs is closing 85 more stores due to poor retail sales over the last year. The report said that the decision was made shortly after "Black Friday" when sales receipts were less than expected. Im trying to find an actual press release on this, when i do ill post a link.

A couple years ago TRUs had to close some of their stores as did KB Toys. Im afraid toy stores are going the way of the dinosuar. We can thank retail chains such as Wal Mart for that. Sorry Beyond.

That's really sad. TRU has always been a great store.

Toys R Us will shutter 73 to 87 locations in coming months as part of its reorganization after being taken private last year, but plans to convert 12 of those into Babies R Us stores.

I think that Arkansas only has 4. I would hate to see any of them close, especially the one in Fayetteville, where I live. I didn't see a list of all the stores that are closing or converting. Post a link to a list if anyone comes across one.

The converting isn't surprising since it wasn't that long ago that theyu were bought by a company that really only wanted the Babies r Us branch.

It is sad. I agree Wal-Mart, Targets and other stores can be blamed for some of it. The big question is, why did TRU let it happen? Wal-Mart and I think Target buys in bulk. So why can't TRU? When you can get a figure at Wal-mart for 6 bucks and it costs 8 or 9 at TRU, there is something wrong.

I know one TRU had closed last year because of poor sales. I hope the other ones arund here don't. But it wouldn't suprise me.

Toys R Us let it happen to themselves. They failed to evolve and they started to fail.

When I was a kid (back before Color TV let alone Cable TV) each Department Store had it?s own Toy Department. Burdines, J.C. Penny, Sears. Jordan Marsh, Richards, Jefferson Ward (funny how Penny?s and Sears are the only ones left down here) had Toy Departments. At some point ?Big Box Stores? started to open. I recall Lionel Playworld as being a direct competitor to Toys R Us and TRU won that battle and Lionel Playworld went away. Also the Department Store Toy Department went away as these two giants took away significant toy business.

It happened in other businesses too. I recall buying hardware from a small Hardware Store called Saunders, not Home Depot or Lowes. I recall buying office supplies from a small office supply store, not Office Depot, Office Max or Staples.

All Wal-Mart did was grow their business. Ever so slowly they evolved from small stores to the Super Centers they have today. Consider this from Wikipedia?

?F.W. Woolworth was among the first five-and-ten-cent stores, which sold discounted general merchandise at fixed prices, usually five or ten cents, undercutting the prices of local merchants. It was also the first store to put merchandise out for the shopping public to handle, select, and purchase. In earlier shops, customers presented the clerk with a list of items to purchase which were all kept behind the counter. The stores eventually incorporated lunch counters and served as general gathering places, a precursor to the modern shopping mall food court.
The concept was widely copied, and five-and-ten-cent stores (also known as five-and-dime stores) were a fixture in American downtowns for the first half of the 20th century, and became anchors for suburban strip malls in middle part of the 20th century. The criticisms that the five-and-dime stores drove local merchants out of business would repeat themselves in the early 21st century, when discount stores became popular.
In the 1960s, the five-and-dime concept evolved into the larger discount store. In 1962, the same year as competitors Kmart (whose Kresge stores competed with the F.W. Woolworth five-and-ten stores), Target, and Wal-Mart, Woolworth founded a discount chain called Woolco. The Woolco chain closed in the United States in 1982. It was more successful in Canada, surviving until 1994, when the remaining 144 stores were sold to Wal-Mart.
The company also operated a number of other retail chains, most notably Kinney Shoe, Northern Reflections apparel shops and Best Of Times, one of which led to the company's change in focus when it started in 1974.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

It?s sad to see Toys R Us suffer. We?ve already seen Kay Bee Toys close a number of stores. I had hoped that after Kay Bee trimmed back stores that TRU might survive. The ONLY way TRU survives is to differetiate itself from Wal-Mart and Target regarding toys and get more exclusives and promote themselves better. I don?t think TRU will go completely away, but they will lose stores in certain markets in an effort to survive.

That gave my memory a pretty good kick. One of my favorite toy stores as a kid was a place called Duane's Toyland in Albany, which ended up closing in the mid-1990s because of Crossgates Mall, Toys R Us, and Kay-Bee. I also remember Sears having a pretty good toy department, and we had Montgomery Wards (Jefferson's parent company) until they closed. I hadn't really thought about any of them in quite a while.

Some of ours too. I know Christmas cleans them out, but they almost always have some stock. The one I was in a few days ago had cleaned out pegs all over the place.

When I was in the store last weekend, they had inventory tags hanging from the shelves. The same ones that we use here, so I paid closer attention to them. I am betting that they run their inventory after Christmas because of the big decrease in stock, makes it easier if there is less to count. After the inventory they should be bulking up. The store here had less than usual on the shelves and next to nothing on the high shelves. I expect this to change in the coming weeks though.

I just stopped by my Toys R Us and yep, they're closing out. Usually when I'd stop in there'd be literally three our four cars in the parking lot, but not this time. There were plenty of people, as everyone wants in on the deals. And supposedly the other nearest location is turning into a Babies R Us.

Just about everything is 20% off, but the sad thing is, that still doesn't make the prices much better than that of Wal Mart or Target. The Ras Al Ghul 2005 figure was regularly $6.99 for crying out loud, and they never did bump the 2005 Batman down from $10. Plus, most of the price stickers are removed from the pegs, so how are we supposed to know the original prices anyway? I really thought I'd leave with something, but I didn't. They did have animated 2-packs (Batman & Two-Face, Batman & Joker, Batman & Robin) piled in a cart for $2 or so, but they were already gone from my last visit.

But if there's any store that should close up, it's K Mart. Their The Batman and Batman Begins figures are still $7.99. Not sure who in their right mind would buy from there.

I only buy from K-Mart if it's an exclusive. Most of the time Target or Wal-Mart have the figures so that's where I go the most.

I use to wear my blue polo with the gold embroder Michigan State logo and tan pants, sneak into the back of the stock room and grab all I can with my pocket knife in hand.

I would break open cases of action figures and grab what I could not find on the store
pegs. :bigrazz::bigrazz:

I did the same thing at Target. A red polo got me an all you can feast ticket in the stock room too.:yes::yes:

I miss those days.:rol:

Good bye Toys R Us...we will miss you here in Joliet.:cry::cry:

I only know two TRU and i only visit one. In Australia its harder to get toys and you go to TRU to get the ones that you find hard to get.

I pay $14.99 Australian for a figure of The Penguin from The Batman.

TRU is doing well off me.

Where'd you exit the building? I would imagine the front door sensors would nab ya, and people would be curious what you were doing with a bunch of figures in your hands.

I admit, I used to ponder the idea of scratching off the UPC code of a cardback and sneaking it out, but never commited myself to it. Don't think I could bring myself to do such an immoral thing. :shy:
