The table of contents on each DVD set should be available on the internet. I think the Toon Zone site has links to some batman WB stuff.

I think the season 4 disks are the darkest: Timm re-designed the series at this point; Gotham's sky is blood red, a lot of the color in characters is gone, the Scarecrow might not be wearing a mask anymore...

What did you get as gifts that you didn't like?

As far as dark comics go, I guess "Killing Joke" qualifies, but it's kinda off (even the author feels he missed a human connection in the book). I think "Long Halloween" is a great story about the dual tragedies of Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent.

The darkest Batman comics may well have been the first. Bat-Man beats the hell out of the guilty, carries a gun, and has no qualms about using a machine gun mounted to his batplane to take down Hugo Strange's monsters. Vampires attack his fiance, the Joker kills without much laughter, and Bat-Man doesn't bother to dodge many bullets...

...all for $19 in Batman Archive 1!

Hee hee. Yeah, those were some harsh times in the Batman world, as simplistic as they were. But for more detailed stories in terms of artwork and plot, ever since Frank Miller tried his hand at Batman in the mid-late '80s, the character has been through a lot of real dark, brutal stuff. If that's your thing, try your hand at stuff like Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Cult and Arkham Asylum.

Those Golden Age tales daikins mentioned are definitely worth reading for any Batman fan though. It's always good to be aware of the original content and to know the roots of our contemporary Batman. Plus they're still pretty entertaining on their own. But keep in mind that the level of "darkness" doesn't automatically make something cool. There are a lot of quality components that make comics and cartoons great.

As far as the Batman cartoons are concerned, Vol. 4 could be considerd darker in terms of style. They revamped a lot of things for better and/or worse. But all four volumes feature great Batman cartoons with good story and atmosphere that's true to the Batman character.

In terms of animation style, some elements of Vol. 4 are darker, but some of the episodes are lighter and more fun than any of the original episodes. Episodes such as Holiday Knights and Joker's Millions are too sugary and childish for me.

On the other hand, episodes such as

Sins of the Father,
Over The Edge,
Old Wounds,
and Mad Love (is this the ep where we discover Harley's origins? Because that's the one I mean)

are absolutely superb and brilliantly dark.

In the shadows I saw my destiny...
I would seek justice...
I would have my revenge...

I thought the story telling was in top form in V4; there wasn't a single "miss" in the whole set as far as I'm concerned. Even the lighter episodes that you mentioned had brilliant moments, like the ending of Holiday Knights (with Gordon & Batman) or Harley's revenge in Joker's Millions. The fact that they were adaptations of comic stories makes them all the better.
