It's without question that after the TV series took off in 1966, so did Batman merchandising. I'm sure many of you like me, enjoy collecting not only the great high-quality Bat-merchandise of today, but all sorts of retro items from the '60s as well. Let's hear you share some of your favorite '66 pieces in your collection...

One of my favorites I came upon just last October at a flea market. The tin lunchbox & thermos set manufactured by Aladdin. The guy had it marked $65, and I told him the best I could offer was $45, which he replied was really "getting down to the bone". I walked off thinking I hadn't made a purchase, then after a bit, felt a hand pat my shoulder. The old fella remade his mind and took my offer. It didn't have the thermos and was scratched up on the edges and on Robin's face in the fire rescue scene. I pondered how cheap I could get one on eBay, but finally made my mind to buy it then and there.

I'm glad I did. Although I haven't got a place for it yet in my display, it's a great looking item, scratches or not, and probably the most I've spent on a single item at a flea market. The front and back feature embossed artwork, which leaves it prone to a lot of scratched-off paint. To my surprise, most of these in this condition (and without the thermos) go on eBay for about $50, so I made a great estimation when buying it. I'm hoping to score the thermos on eBay for about $10. These images aren't of my lunchbox, but very well show the various art featured on this classic 1966 piece.

I've got the Hallmark version that they did a few years back. A real nice peice.

My favorite would have to be the Corgi Batmobile.. I had a ton of those when I was a kid.

...Oh come on. The amount and variety of merchandise made in 1966 can easily compete with that of any other era, including 1989. Am I to believe that none of you collect this stuff?

Right you are, Beyond. Corgis are classic. I still don't have any myself, but I do have some neat old plastic '66 Batmobiles. One I found last October also, never saw it before. I'll have to take a photo.

There were a lot of great toys, just not many that I really collect. Not surprisingly, the car toys are the exception; both the old and newer Corgis were pretty cool, and I should be getting one of the old plastic Simms/Duncan cars in a couple of days (thank goodness for internet trades!).

Some of the old wind up and tin toys from outside of North America are really cool, but expensive now.

Ahhh, 40 years of Batman: The Series. Where would my money have gone if not to you? It's nice to know Chip Kidd isn't the only guy out there with all this stuff, but if I had to pick five of the vintage pieces, they would be:

5. Ben Cooper Batman costume (1966). Mine was fabric. I still remember the halloween parade when I saw that kid with the shiny silver plastic version. Ugh. It was so sad when all the Cooper costumes switched over to plastic. Fabric capes flap better in the wind when one is speeding down the road in a big wheel.

4. Ideal Batman playset: It was a vinyl suitcase with cardboard figures. I got the Spiderman one, my brother got Batman. I've never been able to replace it mint. Thus started a long littany of sibling inequities...

3. Batman: The Cheetah Caper (1969), Big Little Books. Pop read the cover off this one. I ran out to get a clean copy as soon as I found out my wife was pregnant.

2. Batman and Robin: From Alfred to Zowie (1966), Western Publishing. My favorite book. My brother ran out to get a clean copy as soon as he found out my wife was pregnant. Inequities start levelling out.

The best of the best:

1. A black felt cap, with bat ears, yellow oval bat symbol on forehead, and sewn in eye mask (kinda like a green hornet look). It only fits when you're three, much to the glee of my 3 yo. If I can find a link to one, I'll post it.

In my coveted Bat Vault of crazy stuff, the '66 show (and the New Look comics) hold the top honors: A year ago I met Bat- artist Joe Giella and he redid the comics panel in which Batman introduced the "New Look" batmobile to Robin. It brings those awesome comics of that time right back to life for me.

Above all, the holy grail of collectable Batman is a custom made Captain Action Batman figure designed as Adam West. It is brilliant; handcrafted fabric costume, perfectly sculpted and painted West likeness, metal-etched batbelt buckle. It's gorgeous. It's illegal. Dude named Wes made it for some crazy amount of money. Worth. Every. Penny.

Now, who ate my colorforms?

Nice post there, daikins. And welcome to The Voice of Gotham!

Figure customizing is a common craft, but to do it well is variable. I'd love to see some photos of your Captain Action Batman. Sounds like a great figure.

I'm only 19, not born of that era, but I've been wanting to find some of those old '60s books like From Alfred to Zowie as well. Both for my collection, and perhaps future kids.

It?s safe to assume that as a 5 year old I had no idea I was a Batman collector. I had no idea that I would become one 25 years later. Let alone become a Staffer on the Internet?s largest Batman Web Site and display my collection, but I did.

I had a lot of Batman items as a kid, almost all of them long gone. Although I hope to find some treasures stashed away long ago in my parents house one day. I had a homemade Batman costume that my grandmother made from McCall?s Pattern 8398, although she did not sew the cowl with the part over the eyes because of concern I would not be able to see out. So I had a Batman ?hood? instead. I also had a Batman Periscope, a black telescoping periscope that I used to look around corners that was really cool.

These four items are all that remain. Along with the white mug we also had a Robin version in red, I don?t know where it is now. The glass is from All Star Dairies according to the book Batman Collected, although I thought it originally had jelly in it. According to the same book there was a Robin one as well, but I don?t recall us ever having one of them.

The large Batmobile is of course the Aurora model kit. It?s seen better days. Both Batman and Robin figures are missing and it had to be The Joker that broke off the middle rocket tube on the back. The smaller Batmobile is from Husky. It?s actually my sisters as mine became lost somehow. I never had the Corgi version from the 60?s although I know I begged for one often enough.

Wow, I love the glassware- great stuff! I still have those patterns... Interestingly, the shirt and pants for the Batman and Superman costumes were supposed to be purchased. What kind of sewing is that?

Awsome photos, FlaBat! We gotta get that first one in Fan~Photos. I have a bunch of old photos wearing Bat-shirts too, even a couple of my school pictures.

I've seen that recongnized as a jelly glass many times, like you said. There's actually two variations; I own one which doesn't have the yellow paint, only blue & grey. The Robin one is red & yellow and I'm pretty sure I archived them all in the Mugs, Cups & Glasses database a while back, so check out that selection for some other cool '66 items.

Here's a Duncan Batmobile I got at another October flea market for $12. I've never seen another of its kind anywhere actually. It was easy to disassemble, so cleaned 'er up and scraped the rust off the axels. It doesn't have a date, and says "DC Comics" rather than the more common "National Periodical Pub." of the '60s, so it may be from the '70s and not '66. Robin looks all pouty with his arms folded, and Batman must be pretty upset, not even reaching the steering wheel with those nubs for hands. Hee hee.

Three years ago at a Tinley Park, Illinois flea market I found it dumped inside of a card board box. It was covered with chocolate and was missing the top canopy. No scratches or cracks. Wheels still intact, rocket tubes intact, and license plate still intact.

Guess how much I paid for it???

Mind you I'm wearing my black jacket with a stiched on Batman logo and carrying a
plasic Batman Halloween trick or treat bag to carry all my Batman goodies.

$2.00...

Still need that canopy.:lol::cry:

How the hell do I get the Pics. onto this reply???big grinead:

My Avatar still not showing also.

I fixed the link to the picture, but the rest of the stuff with the other commands I deleted. FlaBat

First: you need to find an Online Host for the picture. I use PictureTrail.com, but there are others.

Second: you need to use the "img" HTML Command. There is a Buttom below for it.

I just did it to your earlier post. Ya gotta use the img code with the brackets (these: ]). Just select the URL and click that img button below.

Avatars need to be a certain size in order to show. 70x90 maybe, can't remember exactly.

Edit: Looks like FlaBat Edited it too, just after I did. Smile

I just got the same Batmobile (traded it for an extra Alien Queen figure), but this one has a different stamp on the underside. This one says "Copyright (c) National Periodical Publications, Inc." and "Simms Inc." It's pretty rough, but still a neat toy.

Shadowbat has some neat items there, I have a couple of those myself. I'd love to get those Colgate Soakies someday.

Well, first off, you'd have to identify what the item is. When I think of 1966 Batman dolls, two funny fellas comes to mind; a cheerful plush doll, and Ben Cooper-produced "dangling action figure".

Other figurines and dolls were made in the '60s, so I can't pinpoint what exactly you'd be referring to. There's also the World's Greatest Super-Heroes collection by Mego Corp. Those were made in the '70s.

Wow we must have been online at the same time. Great minds think alike. :bigrazz:

It's 100 X 100 and 30K are the limits for Avatars. Beyond can fix it. My new "West Avatar" was just a tic too big, but he got it up for me. We're all here to help, just ask.

Think that may be in one of my price guides from 1996. It's in black & white, but looks similar to mine. The description goes:

BATMOBILE (Simms 1972) Detailed 8" black plastic replica of the 60's television Batmobile designed by George Barris. There are detailed figures of Batman and Robin behind the seats. Car features blue tinted windshield, chrome hubcaps and bat-logo decals. ($25-50)

This book shows lots of '60s items. I also see what looks like FlaBat's childhood T-shirt at $50-100. And the lunchbox & thermos set is $150-250. Crazy to think...
