Just a thought:
In view of the popularity of the Nolan films, how would you feel about a comic-book imprint featuring Batman, Gotham etc. but with no super-powered characters or fantasy elements? Similar to what Marvel did by having Punisher on the MAX imprint.
This guy goes into the hospital, okay?...
His wife's just had a baby and he can't wait to see them both.
So he meets the doctor and he says, "Oh, Doc, I've been so worried. How are they?"
And the Doctor smiles and says, "They're fine, just fine. Your wife's delivered a healthy baby boy and they're both in tip-top form.
"You're one lucky guy."
So the guy rushes into the maternity ward with his flowers.
But it's empty.
His wife's bed is empty.
"Doc?" he says and turns around and the doctor and all the nurses wave their arms and scream in his face.
"APRIL FOOL! YOU'RE WIFE'S DEAD AND THE BABY'S A SPASTIC!!" |

When it comes to Batman, I generally prefer him in the realistic world, which is usually the kind of feel found in his solo comic books. When he's placed in fantasy, like in the Justice League, he seems to become too much of a side character. I haven't read many JLA comics though, I kind of going off of the Justice League/JLU show. |

Well, in a JL environment you get to analyze different aspects of Batman's personallity that aren't quite obvious in his solo escapades; seeing Batman fight alongside demi-gods and do just as well really does give a window into the fact that he has the "world's strongest will"
However, I really don't like the cross pollination of any form of franchise; particularly not when they are so drastically different. It's weird enough to have Batman in extreme science fiction setting like Superman or Green Lantern, but in JL you've also got fantasy/mythological elements like Atlantis and Amazons.
I'd really like a non-continuity Batman series that doesn't involve guest superheroes and doesn't have to accept what ever crazy crap Morrison throws at us in R.I.P and Final Crisis...

Yeah, I enjoy reading stories with Batman fighting alongside Superman and Wonder Woman and what not, but I just like him in his world a little better.
A Batman story outside of the DCU would be pretty cool. Like I said, I like the realistic setting, which is one of the reasons I love Nolan's films so much. |

I agree with pretty much all of that.
On the one hand I loved the early Morrison JLA issues with Bats taking down a bunch of Martians while the other Leaguers were chained up and helpless - quite the crowd-pleaser, and highlighted what Batman has over everyone else in the DCU.
On the other hand regular DC continuity just doesn't do it for me anymore, as you say the tone is so different. And what's the point in being the World's Greatest Detective when a mystery could turn out to be caused by a dimension-jumping demonic space-doowackey?
That's partly what made the Legends Of The Dark Knight title so refreshing when it came out, it seemed like a lot of the 'super-hero' stuff was stripped away, leaving the writers to get back to what I feel is the essence of the character and his world. Even the supernatural elements back then had more of a horror comic feel to them than a sci-fi or fantasy feel. |

I think there's totally a place for both;
A (sort of) real world Batman (Nolan) and the SF Batman crossovers (Justice League etc).
Simple as that really.
Re Morrison - it's just getting too complicated. Darknight recently mentioned he wished he'd go back to the style of his JLA days and I mentioned the very same book you did (CV). I started to read RIP and I've given up. I'll probably wait til all the issues that make it up are out and hit it in a short space of time. What I'd read of it so far I couldnt make out what was going on.

Yeah I like both too but but don't you think it would be cool to have a title with a totally separate continuity? A continuity where flying aliens just don't even get a look in? Regular continuity wouldn't have to suffer. |
