I have a question that I am hoping someone can answer for me. Its actually an opinion question, so this is more like consulting experts! big grin
If this has been asked in any form previously, forgive me for not sorting through threads thoroughly enough.

I have "Batman" 625-current. I have a fair number of non-sequential issues outside of this, but they are scattered in numerical order. I also have about 35 "Detective Comics" issues, all #600+. Is it a good idea to read just "Batman" and not "Det. Com."? Does it make no difference? Or ought a reader to read both "Batman" AND "Det. Com."???

Please keep in mind that while the best maximum experience would be to read everything ever regarding Batman, that's not really the option. I am trying to hear some well-versed opinions on how to tackle "Batman" from roughly 2004 and forward.

Thanks in advance for your responses!

Hello Nawfal

Difficult one - but I'd say personally that both Batman and Detective are essential. They're the basis from which everything else is born.

You could get away without reading things like Batman Unseen (chosen for no greater reason than it's ongoing at the moment), but I'd struggle to fully feel at home without those core 2. There are some wonderful entries in the Batman range though that weren't actaully "Batman" or "Detective". The 2 Matt Wagner storylines of a couple of years ago spring to mind as something I'd gladly recommend to anyone. Stuff like those would obviously be missed in just taking on the main titles.

I've said to myself on numerous occasions I'm going to just stick with Batman and Detective, but I never do (and seeing as I mentioned it, Batman Unseen is ticking along really nicely at the moment)

You'll also encounter the problem that many titles will be spread over numerous publications! Batman, Detective, Outisders, Robin, Nightwing etc - DC do whatever they can to get you to spend more and buy more titles, and with RIP, Cowl, Reborn etc etc - it actually seems worse than ever trying to keep up (I'd be surprised if it's been this tough keeping up with everything since Knightfall was in full flow)

Also, (for example) if you only did Batman and not Detective - you'd have completely missed the relatively recent run of absolutely wonderful Paul Dini one shots!

I'd say you need both the main titles

real-dark-knight,

Thanks for the kind reply. I kind of figured as much, but since I haven't read the Batman comics before, I thought it would be a good thing to ask. Luckily, just before RIP I managed to get both "Batman" and "Det. Com" on my pull list. My comic book store gives you the one-shots if you subscribe to both - so I've gotten Annuals, Barcelona, and BftC.

And so begins the great "Detective Comics" back-issue hunt begins!

Oh, thanks for the tip re: "Unseen". I'll have to check that out......!
