Oh my god... not happy about this, especially Nightwing, which is one of my favourite titles out there!!! no

Newsarmam announced today Robin, Nightwing, Birds of Prey to End in February.

http://www.newsar...ions.html

DC declined to say if the series’ cancellations were due to sales, or if the three titles would be replaced by three new titles in 2009.

They are doing a Batman Reboot of sorts, so this is to be expected. Catwoman is no more either. Thats all the side books.

I really do hate when they do this crap..

It is really funny how they always justify a restart with a title to bring in new readers, but I always tend to dump a title when this happens. Instead of a jumping on point, I see a jumping off point. That is probably what will happen with Robin at least.

Still, it's interesting to see if DC have anything new up their sleeve that will please fans. But hey, who knows? They might actually kill off the whole Bat-Family.. eek2 !!!

At the back of my head I keep thinking it's to do with the whole R.I.P. story arc, but that ends this month and Feb seems to far off for anything tie in related!!!

Just gutted about the Nightwing book, I've been collecting that since it's release back in 1996!!!

Finger's crossed it's all part of a master plan and not just because of sales?

^The story called Batman R.I.P. ends this month, but the overall story arc ends in Final Crisis. At least that's what I read Morrison say. Besides, R.I.P. is more of an actual event than a story, so I'm pretty sure that this will keep affecting the comics for the next six months, at least.

Do the DC editors really look like guys with plans? Marvel has plans, Image has plans. Do you know what Didio and company are, Jondoe?

They're dogs chasing cars... they wouldn't know what to do with one if they caught it.

Sorry couldn't resist.

^ Nice.
I think I'm in shock. They can't be killing killing these... Otherwise, I think fan backlash from this could get...potentally unpleasent.
Heck, whats funny is I own more issues of Nightwing and Robin than Batman.

LMAO, that's perfect... you couldn't have summed it up any better joker4

I'm with you on this one... I think it's time Dan Didio stepped down and let someone else take the reigns!!!

I mean look at what Marvel have produced since "Civil War", granted not everything is great (can’t please everyone), but nearly every story arc Marvel have produced has had a consistent bearing or affect on the MU... to the extend of being set up 4 or 5 years ago and build to another awesome event..

DC just seem to be trying to cover up all their mistakes since "Crisis on Infinite Earths" and fix continuity without even caring the damage they continue to create on the way...

Sorry rant over!!! I normally try and avoid doing that!!!

Although I did enjoy both Infinite Crisis and 52 eek2

Well, that doesn't exactly convey my actual opinion. Although it is my perception of the workings at DC often recently. Under Didio's reign, things have actually been pretty good. I am not a huge continuity nut, so the effects of the Crises don't really bother me too much. As long as the overall story is good.

Pretty much the only issue I have now is that I have read some of these stories before. R.I.P. is turning into Hush and Final Crisis is Rock of Ages. Maybe there will be some twist that they are holding back that will make them seem less redundant, but I just don't see that end in sight.

As for the conclusion of the series. I have actually been enjoying Robin again for the first time since Chuck Dixon left (the first time). At best I have only sporadically picked up Birds of Prey. I don't understand how it is even really in the Bat-book family anymore. I thought they spun out on their own. Nightwing has really had a difficult time finding a good place ever since Bludhaven went away. It would seem that similar stories could have been told in New York, but that didn't happen. Unfortunately that title has run its course.

The sidekicks will

That's just it, DC have got a huge universe of superheroes to deal with, as do Marvel, regarding continuity. They should just have small little realms of characters and stick to that.

I reckon separating Batman from the metahumans would be a great direction for the series. Granted, it will probably be deemed to much like BB/TDK, but if they're looking at making drastic changes, then they must change it appropriately, according to the fanbase. Obviously, DC would have newcomers to contend with following the impact of the Nolan universe, and incorporate all of the heroes who aren't super-powered (The Question, Green Arrow, etc.)

Then they could have a couple of other realms where they can put their headline superhero acts, and another for the not-so-known cult heroes. I think you got the point a few double-dozen words ago, but still, I just honestly believe that the whole "every single character under one roof" approach to comics doesn't work as well as the suits think it does. Especially when fans have to buy about eight or nine different comics a month just to make sense of the storyline in one of those comics.

Ah well, as long as they keep making original graphic novels, I'll be happy.

Oh no don't get me wrong, some elements of the DC universe story lines have been executed really well (Like I mentioned Infinite Crisis and 52), but are to big not to have an affect on ongoing titles... like with the lead up to Infinite Crisis and Batman's involvement with creating Brother Eye and the OMAC's...

I just feel the current editors haven't communicated very well to bridge a lot of the continuity elements. You never really hear DC doing creative summits and them all getting together to create these events (although I might be very wrong with this). It’s like they've been put into separate creative teams to focus on different corners of the DCU and sometime it creates issues for other writers.

But your right as long as the story at the end of it is enjoyable them I'm happy. I mean I love Batman, Detective, Robin and Nightwing at the moment.

Nightwing has really had a difficult time finding a good place ever since Bludhaven went away. It would seem that similar stories could have been told in New York, but that didn't happen. Unfortunately that title has run its course.

This is one reason I'm enjoying Nightwing again. When "one year later" started and Dick Grayson was setting up shop again, it really invigorated it for me... One reason I'm gutted the series is ending.

Couple of interesting quotes from Fabian Nicieza (Robin), and Peter Tomasi (Nightwing), regarding the cancellation of both titles.

Fabian Nicieza:
Fabien Nicieza is of course disappointed to see his run on “Robin” come to an end but said he was aware of the plans from “the moment he was offered the assignment.” “Everything I’ve done was to prepare Tim Drake for the end of his series and the beginning of the next phase in his life,” Nicieza told CBR.
The writer added that he’s not leaving the Batverse come March. “I am confident you’ll see my name in the credits of a Bat-Family title the month after the ‘Robin’ series ends,” confirmed Nicieza.

Next phase in his life... Is it a hint?

Peter Tomasi:
Tomasi put it this way, “Does Dick, in my mind deserve to be Batman? As my buddy Clint Eastwood would say, ‘deserves got nothin’ to do with it.’ Being Batman is not a party, it’s not something anybody in their right mind would want to do with their life. It’s about having to do it, about serving the common good, putting others before you. Does Dick Grayson fit that bill? Of course he does, without question. But will it be his face under the cowl when all is said and done? Therein lies the bigger question and the answer to that is several months away.”

Several Months!!! I've got to admit I am getting very excited about what's coming up now... I know easily please me lol

Some more on the cancellation of these titles today over at Newsarama. I'm starting the feel a little better about this now...

1: Let’s start with the big news from last week, that is, the cancellation of Nightwing, Robin and Birds of Prey. Looking at the sales estimates on those three, they’re not the lowest selling titles DC has going, and they serve a purpose in the DC Universe and Batman’s world, so what’s the deal? There are rumors and thoughts that they are going to be replaced, so is there any hope to be offered?

Dan DiDio: What we see on those particular books given where Batman is heading and the stories in the Batman universe are going, the stories that were taking place in Robin, Nightwing and Birds of Prey have all run their natural course, and have definite conclusions as part of the “Last Rites” stories following Batman R.I.P. That’s one of the reasons why those books came to an end.

Needless to say, and to put everybody’s minds at ease, that does not mean we will no longer be telling stories with Barbra Gordon, Dick Grayson or Tim Drake. As a matter of fact, we’re about to increase the level of prominence they have and their importance within the Bat-universe, if people can believe that they can get even more important, which they will. And more importantly, they’re going to be featured prominently in a number o f miniseries that will be following their cancellations. Tim and Dick are front and center in all that happens in Battle for the Cowl, and Barbra Gordon will be moving into an Oracle miniseries immediately following the cancellation of Birds f Prey.

What follows those miniseries though, will have to be left for another discussion.

We’re still locking down the writer on the Oracle miniseries, but Battle for the Cowl will be written and drawn by Tony Daniel, which we’re very excited about. This is the first time Tony’s written in a while, and he’s just champing at the bit to be able to do this, and we’re excited that he’s on the series.

An Oracle mini-series sounds cool. More of a focus on Barbra will be nice to see.

Also love the idea of Tony Daniel writing and drawing the "Battle for the Cowl" arc... loved his run on "THE TENTH", back in the nineties.

battle for the cowl. hahahaha, while bruce is resting in peace somewhere, he's gonna be laughing at his little minions arguing about who becomes the next bat.

i say tim becomes batman.
dick's been robin, nightwing, renegade for a little bit, and even batman at one point. at least we know tim is consistent with identity. and let's not talk about jason; that boy is nuts, lol; robin, hush, red hood, red robin, what's next?

Not to mention Dick has already worn the Mantel of the Bat back in the nineties in issue #512 (“Prodigal”), after Bruce’s decision to hang up the costume and rediscovery of the Batman identity after “Knightsend”.

But it didn’t last long. When Bruce came backing issue #13 Robin…

To be honest, either Dick or Tim and I’m happy, they both deserve it.
