With it all hitting the fan in this recent issue of Infinite Crisis, lots of people are posting their specualtion as to who is going to die. The outrage at the prospects of some characters going away gets a little excessive on some of the boards I have read.
Personally I can see the death of a character as an okay thing if it is done well. I really hate the stories that seem to kill the character, but don't make it seem worthwhile. Sure I am upset that the character is dead, but I also really like a good story, so I can live with it. It is just a story after all.
What do you guys think? Lots of people are speculating that Dick Grayson's days are numbered. That has caused lots of posts of people saying that they better not kill him off.
Can you live with a great story that kills off a character that you like, or would it make you swear off comics?

I always like to read a good story, but I wouldn`t like to see the character I like dead! But I also think that Dick will live, he is too big a character to die!

If I swore off comics because they killed a character I liked, I wouldn't read anything any more. As long as the story is well told (or at least leads to something well told), I'll keep reading. |

They won't kill off Dick. He's to popular, besides, killing off another Robin? DC would do themselves in.

I can accept it if it's done well. I hated seeing Blue Beetle die last year, but it was within the pages of a great story, so I didn't let it bother me. When Crispus Allen was killed in last month's issue of Gotham Central, I was so mad I threw the book down and cursed out loud. The story was so good, though, that I'm not swearing off of DC's books or writing them hate mail or anything ridiculous like that. I hated Barry Allen dying in Crisis On Infinite Earths, but he got what is probably the greatest sendoff any superhero has ever gotten, so I feel that it was okay.
On the other hand, many, many, many people complained about Hawkeye's death in the Avengers: Disassembled story, mostly because they felt it was poorly done. After reading that story a couple of months ago, I can agree with them. It was a stupid, stupid death. So, I can handle it, but it's all in the execution.

Drunken Fist gave some great examples of what I am talking about. I read Avengers Disassembled a while back, and there where characters deaths in there that were handled so poorly that it just felt like driving over a small speed bump. You knew something was there, but it just didn't register. These were some major characters whose deaths were made into minor events.
Infinite Crisis has had a lot of minor characters' deaths, but it doesn't bother me that they aren't made into major things. When the big characters die DC usually does a good job of making you really knowand care.

Yeah, they usually even do it with minor characters. When Identity Crisis first came out, I didn't know who Sue Dibny was, and I knew virtually nothing about the Elongated Man. But boy, did I ever get choked up reading that first issue. They really made me care about and miss this character I never even knew had existed before I read that issue.

I finished that first issue of Identity Crisis, and haven't picked it up again. The issue was just too sad a thing to read. I really liked the issue it wasn't written or drawn badly, it was just emotionally too much. It seems like a lot of people criticize Meltzer, but he really wrote a story that really made you feel for the characters.

Identity Crisis has been out so long and so widely publicized I don't think you have to worry about a spoiler warning for it. I usually give a story about a month after it is released to stop warnings, but with so much happening recently that's shrunk down to about a week.

No, not everyone. I know a couple of people who are still waiting for the trade bfore they read it, and have avoided majoy spoilers this long. I don't want anyone in a similar situation to have a major plot point ruined on this site. If this thread was specifically about ID Crisis, it would be a fair assumption that plot spoilers would be discussed. But that's not the case. I don't see a problem with inserting some spoiler space just as a courtesy to those few who still haven't read the story yet.

to ME batman is the greatest, he has the best story, great action but ALOT and i mean ALOT of people would disagree for the oh so cliche and over used phrases like "against other heroes like captain america and thing and hulk hes nothing" or "his villains cant fight for their lives" or "hes got no powers":sleepw::sleepw::sleepw:
