I didn't know if this belonged here or in the Batman begisn section. I figured it was here because these are published works.
I was going to Wikipedia just to see if there was anything there that was new. I decided to check the Batman Storylines section and I caught three titles I was not familar with:
Dead White
Inferno
& Fear Itself
Checking them, I found out something I never knew: these were novels tying in to Batman Begins. I never knew that, nor was it ever on our Batman news on the internet. Dead White came out in July, Inferno on Halloween, and Fear Itself is set for a February 2007 release.
For you guys, here are what these books are all about:
Dead White Back cover description:
Who better than Batman to protect the dangerous city of Gotham, where even the cops are crooks? But the latest imminent terror might be too much for the burgeoning Caped Crusader, who is still carving out a place for himself in the minds of Gotham?s criminals.
There?s a host of deadly new weapons in Batman?s glittering, sinister city?in the hands of a psychotic mastermind called White Eyes. With his radical murder machine, the fiendish leader of Gotham?s racist Bavarian Brotherhood can move beyond dealing drugs and hot guns to pursue his real passion: the white supremacist takeover of America.
The homegrown terrorists? first strike?at the heart of our nation?s capitol?is only weeks away. But first they?ll test out their killer toys on Batman, who is hot on the trail of White Eyes and his brutal militia. Ounce for ounce, muscle for muscle, Batman?s no match for the cunning villain and his wicked new firepower. At least, that?s how White Eyes sees it.
Batman has other ideas...
NOTE: This novel takes place four months after Batman Begins.
Inferno cover description:
Gotham?s never been so scorching, the Joker?s never been more despicable, and Batman?s never been in such grave danger.
With more than thirty fires raging out of control across the city, Gotham is indeed a hell on earth. But torching the population is small potatoes for the arsonist extraordinaire known as Enfer. The pyromaniac?s mad masterpiece is Arkham Asylum, blazing like a Roman candle and engineered to provide the perfect escape for Arkham?s most infamous inmate, the Joker. But the dire situation goes from bad to beyond monstrous when the archvillain?s path to freedom leads directly to the Dark Knight?s cave.
The Joker believes in striking while the iron is hot ... and now it?s never been hotter. After all, the diabolical villain has devised the ultimate joke: launch the mother of all crime waves, masquerading as the Caped Crusader himself! With Gotham erupting in flames and its #1 crime fighter fast becoming its #1 enemy, the burning question is: Who?s going to get the last laugh?
NOTE: The novel is set approximately two years after the events of the film Batman Begins. Additionally, this novel appears to be set after the events of the upcoming sequel, The Dark Knight, as Vicki Vale, a columnist for the Gotham Gazette in the novel, remarks that "Hearing that Two-Face or the Joker is definitely off the streets will let us all sleep better at night," in reference to the arson that destroys Arkham Asylum and frees several notorious prisoners.
For any of you who have seen The Batman animated series, the idea of Joker pretending to be Batman is similar but in the book
SPOILER

the Joker steals the actual Batsuit, a number of gadgets and tools, and the Tumbler/Batmobile so he can frame Batman.

Fear Itself:
Not much is known of this book. What is known is that Batman will fight the Scarecrow. The book will be released on February 27th, 2007.
Already I'm interested in reading these books. Did anyone know these were out and have read them? If so, how were they?

I brought up Dead White back in April (book information comes out way ahead of releases). I didn't know that it was a tie into Begins because the information was very brief.
You can pre-order Fear Itself HERE It is set to be released on February 27, 2007.

I've known about Dead White for just a little while. Not sure why I never posted about it... I agree, though, that it's odd these books didn't seem to make any Batman news sites. I just stumbled upon the book on Amazon I think. I'm interested in finding out if they're any good. Good idea to post about 'em, Nate.

You guys knew about it?! I never heard about these until yesterday. How are these books, has anyone ever read them?
There is a discussion on continuity of the novels from Batman Begins and the upcoming The Dark Knight. On one hand: while I can't speak for TDK nor the third film since we don't anything beyond what was announced, I think of these as alternate follow ups to the film that references not just BB but other things that are also what may happen in the film sequels. An example of this is the recent Spider-Man Animated series (3D series I should say) where it follows an alternate road from the first film and couldn't be part of the second or third films. Another example, that invovles a book, is the Star Wars book called: Splinter of the Mind's Eye which was an alternate sequel to A New Hope if that film proved unsuccessful.
But you never know if these books' authors have had contact with Nolan and this books might be, could be, connected into the movies. But that's 50/50.

I certainly don't like the cover of Inferno, it's horrible.
The Amazon customer reviews aren't suggesting they're something to write home about; although if you look, you'll often be very hard pushed to find more than a 4 star review for ANYTHING to do with Batman, Star Wars or Doctor Who! It seems fans of those particular universes like to be extra critical - usually to the point of pedantic (& quite frankly ridiculous). I do wonder why a lot of Amazon reviewers even bother. I like (and tend to agree with) Nate's reviews.

i read batman ead white for a school project. i got 100% on it! lol.
but anyways...it was pretty good. i dont know why, but the author put a lot of new stuff into it. batman had a new love interest(teia), new enemy(big white), new ally(detective sullivan), new everything. it was supposed to be realistic, but it seemed a little ridiculous to me. it was basically batman vs the new age nazis(the bavarian brotherhood is what they called themselves). it was boring at times, but i dont like books anyways.
i give it a 4/5. mainly because it wasnt entirely told in the eyes of batman. a lot of it was told in the eyes of the detective. i guess it was a way to show what a typical cop would think of batman...but i dont really care about that. i wanna know whats going on in batman's head. that psycho...lol. actually, he says he sees things; like shadows of a batman costume. he's defientely psycho. haha.

I knew about these books, but I didn't know they were set in the "Begins" world. I haven't picked any of them up because I still have a bunch of books already that are just waiting to be read.

Well, I didn't know about these, but apparantly my friend who knows everything that goes on in the world did. According to their information, the word on the street is that these are actually pretty good.
I should pick these up, I'm interested to see whether or not these end up like Splinter of the Minds Eye. I'm guesing that the Joker is not going to be like he's written in the book, however the White Eye one looks like it isn't built on shaking foundation, and Scarecrow might not apear in the sequals; so his book shouldn't do anything to bad.
Of course the problem with making your own story in someone else's on-going continuity, the smallest thing could be an error. In Splinter Of The Minds Eye, they showed a romance between Luke and Leia, and they said Leia had no conection to the force; but in Empire they prooved that Leia and Luke weren't intrested in each other, and in Jedi they showed that Leia was connected to the force.
So if they say that the new Batmobile is smaller, but Nolan makes it bigger, then they have a problem. And they're going to have to describe the new Batcave, and we all know that's probably going to look differant.
Never start with the head; the victim gets all fuzzy!

I read the preface to Inferno in the bookstore when it first came out, and that was at least interesting enough for me to try the rest of the book. I didn't at the time for some reason I can't remember, and haven't been back there to pick up a copy yet. I'd still like to at least give it a shot.

You know, I don't recall the cover looking quite like that in person (the colors seem off). Either my memory is making it seem better than it was, or that's a bad photo of it. |
