In light of the recent reveal of Bruce Wayne's new duds, I figured it would be best to have a discussion thread on the subject. Especially considering how many comments were posted on the news thread.
Anyway, I really like it. Particularly the removal of the "underwear" on the costume. And I for one welcome the return of the oval emblem.
My one nitpick would be to have the belt black instead of yellow. But it really doesn't matter.

It's a fair mix of Burton's and Nolan's look for Batman. I like that the "underwaer" is gone too. I always like the 1990's all dark gray bodysuit. This new one is like that.

it's not too much of a change - but i like what i see. what i like best about it is that it's black and gray instead of blue and gray.
maybe it's just me, but this suit reminds me a lot of how batman looked in the 90s (batman '89, returns, forever, btas, and even the comic books).
i hope batman gets the yellow oval in the dark knight sequel!! highly unlikely, but it would be cool.

The yellow oval is waaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy more well known than the the Batman symbol popularized by Batman Begins... Until I began reading comic books I didn't even know that Batman had so many variations to his costume due to the fact I only saw Batman as he was in the Burton Films

well the nolan bat-logo is just totally different than anything else, lol. it actually looks more like a wider version of the batman beyond logo.
i think the oval-less bat-insignia was popularized first by frank miller, then was super-popularized by jim lee's batman design in HUSH. i think from there, batman just stopped having the oval all together.
i can't say this for everyone else, but i always thought of the batman with the yellow oval to be a matured, experienced batman, whereas the batman without it to be was a young, less experienced batman...well that's how it was in the animated series and brave and the bold anyways....and sort of the comic books too, until the 2000's-ish.

The oval-less logo was Batman's first logo, actually. He had it from his creation in 1939 until the early 60s, when they redesigned his costume in an effort to seperate the character from the 1950s "Batman in Space!" era of comic books.
The 60s logo remained as Batman's symbol until about the year 2000. Following the success of Batman's design in TNBA, they incorporated the oval-less logo into Batman's comic book design once again following the "No Man's Land" story arc.

Yeah, wasn't it when Scott McDaniel took over pencils for the Batman title when the oval was gone? I love his Batman, by the way. It's funny they added the yellow oval to get him away from a sort of campy era, you'd think it'd turn out to be the other way around.
It seems like I'm in the minority here, but I actually prefer the oval-less black bat on the chest. When they first changed Batman's design in TNBA, I wasn't too pleased with the oval gone. But it's grown on me, so many of my favorite Batman incarnations have been with the simple black bat. I do like the suit though, I'm just not good with change really, costume wise anyway. I've always been disappointed whenever I find out they're going to tweak the suit. I didn't even like that they were gonna change it in TDK. |

I like it a lot. Reminds me of Burton's with the logo connected to the cape and all. I think if they were going to remove the underwear, maybe make the suit look more like kevlar so that it wasn't bunched up near the trunks like they were skinny jeans.

Always liked the yellow oval. When i thought of batman i always thought of his costume with the "Batsign" (Or whatever you want to call it) inside of that. It looks good to me. |

The new suit looks nice, I like the plain black bat though:

At least it appears that Dick will be keeping the current style.
Have you all seen the variant cover:

Batman did not have a “yellow oval Bat logo” on his chest until the 1966 TV series came out. Even then they originally had the “retro Bat” logo on Adam West’s costume for the screen tests. They made a change just before it aired and the comic books followed later with a yellow oval.

Hmmm... I'd always heard it was in the early sixties. But I guess that could be a popular misconception.

Hey Guys, new member. Been lurking for a while: great site! I'll jump into the new costume debate. Glad the underwear (or outerwear) is gone. However, from a practical, realistic standpoint, I'd prefer to see the Batman Beyond suit. Think about it: why does Bats still use a cape? Just one more thing to get caught, torn, etc. I know it has dramatic effect, it's just not practical. And I always wondered: what if Batman got cut on his face below the mask? How would Bruce explain it in public? Beyond the ridiculous excuses like "He wouldn't show until the cut healed, plastic surgery, etc., I've always thought a full face mask made more sense. And any guy who puts himself in harm's way like Bats would have to wear body armor, not just spandex. The techno-armor suit from BB just makes more sense.
Just my two cents... |

welcome to the bytb boards!
as for a completely new batman beyond suit overhaul...it would be cool, but i don't think there are enough reasons to do so. because the cape is fairly practical, i would think...it's used for gliding, fire protection, looking cool, among other things. and the batman beyond mask never made sense to me - i didn't get how it covered his whole face, but allowed his lips to move as if the mask was his actual face.
besides, if batman got an overhaul, so would the rest of the dcu. i'm not sure people are ready for such a big change....but maybe that's exactly what DC needs? who knows...

Hey Phil,
Thanks for the welcome. As for Bats cape: the BB suit does everything you mention, it has the pop out glider wings under the arms, is fire-proof, and even has the flight booster jets in the boots. I agree the whole mouth in the mask deal doesn't make sense, I prefer a straight mask with just the 2 eye holes (like the Knight Shadow Batman figure).
As for an overhaul: that's pretty much how comics operate these days isn't it? You can get away with just about anything, as long as it's temporary. |

The colors depend on the colorist. Yeah, the variant cover has a blue cape and cowl. But if you look at the first two pictures, it's straight black and grey.
It's exaclty how they've been coloring the cape for the last 10 years.

man im sorry ive been gone guys and oricle welcome to the grandest stage on earth, ok now for my piece on this.
1. this costume is awful- if they r gonna add red to the costume i want more than a small cirlce behind the bat before the yellow takes place again, or just make the bat red
2. personally i like when they change the color of the cape and mask, it would be better if it was red after they went and put it on the chest. and the not having trunks thing is ok i guess but i want some kinda color there other than the usual yellow belt if thats the case, change it up a bit.
3. this is bruce wayne batman back from the dead make him look darker and like hes been thru hell and back, ( he almost has been) lets make those pointed ears longer and more demonic and mabey a face mask like jason had in battle for the cowle it was awsome.
ok thas my little rant, questions, comments, concerns?
