Talk about the most gloomish, distrubing book here.
You don't get it, boy... this isn't a mudhole... it's an operating table.
(crack!)
And I'm the surgeon.

I've read it twice and its an example of a book that has to be read by everyone. Yes, its creepy. And distrubing too. But this book has somethign to do with that point where Batman and his villians like the Joker are alike with different goals.

It is also very on the art end of comics. This is one of the few Batman things that the snobbish people can file under graphic novel. If you don't have time to read it, just flip through it and look at the pictures. It is really great.

It is definitely a dark and rather disturbing story. It briefly recounts the history of Arkham, and then focuses on Batman descending to the asylum, as the inmates have escaped and are holding the asylum employees hostage. The Dave McKean art is great, and some of the best parts are the little extras in the back. I have the first edition hardcover, so I don't know if this is in all the other versions, but there is a little thing in the back where the patients talk about their dreams. The Joker's is unsettling, and very revealing about what kind of person he is. It's a great book all around, and on the short list of "must read" Batman stories.

How does Batman look in this? Or do I want to know? It's always in wrapper in the stores.

Arkham Asylum: Living Hell, was a miniseries that ran a few years ago. It was basically about a guy who pleaded insanity in court to avoid prison, so they sent him to Arkham. Things didn't work out to well for him.
It was a pretty good story, not really as artistic as Arkham Asylum is, more of just a good comic story. It is a good read, and focuses more on villains than the normal stuff does.
