What happened to Jason Todd and should he have been brought back to life? - Posted on 24-08-2006 16:38

I have not been able to keep up with what has been going on since the Batman Annual #25 came out. All I wanted to know is what happened to him after Nightwing OYL.

Personally, after reviewing what I had picked up so far, I do not think he should have came back. Much of this reasoning comes from the disappointment he has been since OYL. I could have felt differently he was used properly, but I have not been convinced so far as to if he really deserves to be brought back to life.

What do you think?

This is what happened in Nightwing OYL about Jason:

Jason has resurfaced in New York City, patrolling the streets as a murderous version of Nightwing. He executes a kidnapper, nearly beats a rapist to death, and even slices Dick Grayson's hand when the two spar on a rooftop. Jason shows no intention of giving up the Nightwing persona, and continues to taunt Grayson by wearing the costume and suggesting that the two become a crime-fighting team. Grayson refuses to join his side and methods of crimefighting. Not long after the two Nightwings meet up, Jason is captured and imprisoned by unknown mobsters, leaving a very troubled and reluctant Grayson to rescue him. Jason is rescued by Grayson, however he has briefly acquired the ability to transform into an insectoid and swallow people. After helping Grayson defeat the Pierce brothers, Jason leaves New York City and the Nightwing mantle to Grayson, along with a telegram telling Grayson he has returned to normal and still considers them family.

Recently, Dan Didio stated that Judd Winick (the writer who wrote Jason's return) will have Jason Todd appear in Green Arrow and eventually a Red Hood minseries.

What were they smoking when they came up with that plotline. Please tell me you were making that up.

I could not get past the first issue of Nightwing OYL. There was just too many things that were off about everthing.

Huh. I haven't read any Nightwing since OYL, but that does sound pretty goofy. And Batman Annual #25 seemed like a bit of a mess. Some wandering magic dust caused by Earth-2 Superboy revived Jason within the coffin? Then he wanders around in a zombie-like state, but he was somehow able to calm down within the coffin and find a strategic way of escaping before becoming a stoic zombie. They also found a place to make use of the uninked version of Jason surviving the explosion, but it really made little to no sense.

I'll admit, the return of Jason Todd was entertaining for a bit, but overall, it was a pretty sleazy idea from the beginning. Part of me wishes it was erased from continuity, and I doubt I'm the only one.

No, that's not what Nate said. He said that Jason Todd acquired those abilities. Batman Annual #25 reveals Todd's strange ressurection as I mentioned in my previous post.

The Hush persona seemed to have a strange explanation. Todd found out about Thomas Elliot's hatred toward Batman and they agreed to work together. Todd and Clayface were simply apart of Elliot's plan at that point to break Batman down.

The Red Hood persona was a reference to The Joker, as Joker was forced to use the Red Hood gimmick the night his ill fated accident. The main reason Todd came back as Red Hood was because he was angered to find that Batman had still not killed The Joker even after his own death in the explosion.

The Nightwing persona... Well, I just don't quite get that one. Maybe he felt that if he hadn't been killed and continued his role as Robin, he would have progressed into his own Nightwing-type character like Grayson. I haven't read those issues anyway, so I'm not sure.

You know it was the fans that killed off Jason Todd as Robin using a telephone poll that DC Comics set up. So I think DC should honor those fans and keep Jason Todd dead. I honestly don?t see the point in bringing him back again and again.

Technically, he only came back from the dead once, but I totally agree. Although I think the only reason Thomas Elliot knew about Todd's history with Batman was because he met Todd himself, if Hush was done more as a tease (having it simply be a manipulated Clayface all throughout), it would've been fine. It would've kept fans on their toes for a real return but never actually gone through with it. Apparently they tried the same thing with Captain America by bringing Bucky back as a villian.
