I liked Hush and Knightfall. I tried getting into All-Star Batman and Robin but I didn't like the way Miller made Batman. Plus its been on hiatus for a year. |

The Killing Joke, Arkham Asylum, Year One, Terror, and The Dark Knight Returns are some of the best.

Can you get the Killing Joke in a graphic novel, or only a comic book? The comic is impossible to find.

Aside from the required Year One and DKR, here are five of my favorites right off the top of my head:
-Mad Love
-The Killing Joke (available in the DCU Stories of Alan Moore trade, though you can probably track down the single-issue version of it fairly easily. It's been reprinted about a dozen times)
-The Long Halloween and Dark Victory
-Batman: Stange Apparitions ( a trade that reprints one of the most highly-regarded runs on any superhero comic)
-Tales of the Demon (a trade reprinting a bunch of classic stories featuring Ra's al Ghul, the Dark Knight's greatest nemesis)

BornAgainBatman, we had a thread a while back for "essential" Batman comics that you may find helpful. The link is shown below.

The term ?graphic novel? is basically used to arouse a sense of credibility toward comic books as a serious literary medium and do away with their old connotation of child-like publications. It?s often used with collected versions of story arcs, usually in a square bound format. The Killing Joke is a square bound one-shot and often considered a graphic novel. Its various printings can be identified by their variation in color used on the cover title and aren't hard to find on eBay (I got the 2nd printing for a few bucks). So in most general terms, comic books and graphic novels could be considered one in the same, and as far as I know, about three or so square bound editions of The Killing Joke were made.

In addition to what's been mentioned, I also liked Arkham Asylum: Living Hell (not much Batman in it, but a good story), Batman v. Predator (one of the rare cases where a crossover comic was actually done well), and Black & White V1 (one of my favorite collections ever).

Oh yeah, and Death in the Family was a good Batman story.
I think my favorite was Disordered Minds with the Batman/Spider-Man teamup. It combined my favorite DC and Marvel heroes. |

A couple that haven't been mentioned........
Matt Wagner's very recent Batman & The Monster Men is simply beautiful. I've not yet started it's companion Mad Monk, but as soon as no.6 is out I'll be on it in a second (and I'm hopeful it's every bit as good as Monster Men).
Child Of Dreams; I wasn't sure about that one when I picked it up; and it did seem strange at first, but it was totally unputdownable. I loved it.
Re "Graphic Novels" - I've lightened up a bit now, but in the past it was an expression that could get really get my goat - it was red wine/coffee table snobbery for closet comic fans. Get on board or get off, please! Cale summed it up very nicely (without getting out of his pram like I did!)

In actuality, the term "Graphic Novel" stems from the fact that the books are novel length and based entirely on graphics; and they can't be called "Comic Books" because that term refers to smaller, cheaper books that are usually serialized. And Graphic Novels such as Long Halloween can be refered to as "Compilations" as they are entire previously released Comic Book serials rereleased together.
Calling a Graphic Novel a Comic Book is like calling Batman Begins a Short, and calling Comic Book a Graphic Novel is like calling BTAS a Movie.
Anyway, my favorite Comic stories ever are Long Halloween/Dark Victory,
Hush, and Dark Knight Returns
Long Halloween & Dark Victory because they are great stories.
Hush because it's the best evaluation of Batman's character that I've ever seen.
And Dark Knight Returns because for as long that I can remember I've been a fan of duels; two combatants fighting on an even, or almost even, field, and DKR ends with the best dual ever. Batman Vs. Superman.
Never start with the head; the victim gets all fuzzy!

So far, so good. The battle with the Monk is one of my favorite early Batman stories, so I've been really interested in this one. Monster Men was great, and this one is too, so far. There are some plot threads from Monster Men that are carried over into Mad Monk. If Wagner throws in the Batgyro from the original version of the story I'll dance with glee.

Monster Men came out when I was looking for a decent comic book shop, and consequently I am missing issues #1 & #4...I need to snag those soon.
