Comics have lost another luminary. Details are still sketchy, but word came earlier today that Marshall Rogers died yesterday or Saturday. The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
Rogers was born on January 22nd, 1950 in Flushing, New Jersey. He was 57.
He is well known to have worked with Steve Englehart, who together worked on Detective Comics #471-#476, and for years, their version of Batman was considered to be the definitive one – a dark, brooding hero who stayed to the shadows and flowed with a natural grace.
This is really sad news. One of the first Batman comics I bought was the old Greatest Stories Ever Told that includes two of Rogers' stories. He really did some great work. The dynamics in his art make the pictures really jump off the page, something most artists are unable to do these days.

This is one of those times when the death of someone I don't even know has hit me pretty hard. Marshall Rogers is one of the all-time greats. His art is some of the best that has ever graced a comic page. In the span of about a dozen issues, he made an impression on Batman that is still influential. He proved he still had it when he reteamed with Steve Englehart and Terry Austin in 2005 for the Dark Detective series, following up on their definitive run in the '70s. They were set to do a sequel too, since it was recieved so well. This is sad, sad news. At least it may inspire a tribute book or something, and make more people aware of him and expose more people to his wonderful work.
