So i've been a batman fan for some time but growing up mostly in the 90's I grew up on the movies and BTAS. I never really read the comics. Now that I am older i've learned to deal with the format in which they are written. I'm starting to buy and collect them. I was just wondering what is everyones favorite and which ones do you reccomend for me that I'm just starting out. The first one i've bought was The Killing Joke and now I am reading The Long Halloween.

I posted a list of my top 20 Batman stories of all time on my Myspace recently, including honorable mentions that i think i'm just gonna integrate into the actual list by extending the list. Anyway, rather than repost it here, here's the link. Hope it works:

Batman Year One
Knightfall
And my friend just got Long Halloween so I will be reading that soon. PS What book should I get? Joker coming out soon or that Harley Quinn book that just came out this year?

I just posted something similar on the WatchmenComicMovie forum:

Top Five:

Year One;
The Dark Knight Returns;
Knightfall Part One: Broken Bat;
Arkham Asylum;
Gotham By Gaslight.

Honourable Mentions:

Nine Lives;
Long Halloween;
The Cult

I think Killing Joke is pretty over-rated, my least favourite Alan Moore.

This guy goes into the hospital, okay?...
His wife's just had a baby and he can't wait to see them both.
So he meets the doctor and he says, "Oh, Doc, I've been so worried. How are they?"
And the Doctor smiles and says, "They're fine, just fine. Your wife's delivered a healthy baby boy and they're both in tip-top form.
"You're one lucky guy."
So the guy rushes into the maternity ward with his flowers.
But it's empty.
His wife's bed is empty.
"Doc?" he says and turns around and the doctor and all the nurses wave their arms and scream in his face.

"APRIL FOOL! YOU'RE WIFE'S DEAD AND THE BABY'S A SPASTIC!!"

Hate fives, I'll go for ten...

1) The Man Who Laughs
2) All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder Vol. 1
3) The Long Halloween
4) Year One
5) The Dark Knight Returns
6) Dark Victory
7) War Drums/War Games
8) No Man's Land
9) Cataclysm
10) The Dark Knight Strikes Again

I reckon Hush & War Crimes were both great letdowns, and both Arkham Asylum & The Killing Joke are well overrated. So was the whole 'Knight____' saga.

Joker and Batman R.I.P. will probably make it into the top 10 when they're released.

I redid mine.

The Long Halloween
Haunted Knight
Dark Victory
Batman Year One
Knightfall

I dont know why everyone thinks TDK Returns is so good?? I hate Batman killing. It gives me the feeling of Tim Burton for some reason.

All the stuff written by Jeph Loeb
and Frank Miller as well

So basically:

The Long Halloween
Year One
Dark Victory
The Dark Knight Returns
Haunted Knight
The Dark Knight Strikes Again
Hush
Superman/Batman: Public Enemies
even the Batman/Spirit one-shot

while we're on the subject, I'd check out DC The New Frontier as well.
it doesn't have as much Batman as I would like but it's a beautiful
piece of literature.

Ummm... Who did Batman Kill in DKR? Harvey lived, the cops he fought lived, the mutants he fought lived, Superman lived and Joker killed himself; so who did Batman kill?

I couldn't get into DKR. It seemed kind of boring to me. Year One wasn't all that good either. I guess I'm not much of a fan of Frank Miller's writing.

My favorite stories are

1. Batman & Spider-Man: Disordered Minds (My two favorite heroes of all time teaming up to fight Carnage and Joker. Amazing!)
2. Hush (because Jim Lee's art is jaw-dropping)
3. The Long Halloween (I loved how this was written like a mystery novel)
4. The Killing Joke (Learning the Joker's origin gives him a much more terrifying personality. You know he's capable of stopping but he doesn't want to)
5. Death in the Family (This was the first graphic novel I read so it's pretty special to me.)

The only thing stopping you from success is doubt.

Hush, Killing Joke, Long Halloween, Dark Knight Returns, Year One. I also give special recommendations to Joker and Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth.
