Has anyone read this novel? It has a really good interpretation of both Bruce and Alfred but I stopped reading it because the plot was taking a direction I didn't like.

Marge: Homer, I've got someone here who can help!
Homer: Batman?
Marge: No, a scientist!
Homer: Batman's a scientist.
Marge: It's not BATMAN!!

I read it a long time ago. I don't remember much other than the subject matter. Just a warning that the novel does contain some disturbing things about child abuse and abduction. Not exactly in a graphic way, but stuff like that just gets to me. I need to find my copy and give it another read though, so I remember better how bad it does get.

I'm not actually talking about the child abuse stuff.

What I'm refering to is....(*SPOILERS AHEAD)

SPOILER WARNING!!!!!

when it turns out that the Waynes being murdered was actually a planned contract hit because Martha Wayne was a secret spy who brought down tons of underage prostitution rings and kiddie porn industries.

I hated that. The Waynes' murders MUST be a totally random event. It MUST be. Or it just doesn't work. End of story.

I really idsliked that aspect of the story, too. Another thing that bugged me was that Batman kept asking this lady for all this information, and talking about how hw wanted to learn more. Seemed a bit too "after school special" to me. He's the world's greatest detective, he can find that stuff out for himself. Anyway, it's easy for me to enjoy it for what it was: a legend of the dark knight. Nothing more or less than that. I disregard stories that I don't fit into my personal contintuity, anyway, no matter what format they're in.
