Robin should have a Red Robin-type mask. Still, I like the rest of the suit. Especially the subtle Nightwing-style design on the chest.

TBH, I hate both Batman and Robin's masks. Not in your drawings, just in general, I think they're pretty stupid. Batman should have artificial jaws covering his mouth that look like the Predator, or maybe the pig cops from Duke Nukem 3D, to give the impression that he's more of a bat-demon than bat-man. I just reckon it'd terrify people a lot more than the traditional Batman mask. I don't think I need to state my reasons with Robin either, it's a bit of an idiot's idea for a 'mask', it's more like clothing for your face, not a cover.

I agree, too much of a change and you destroy the imagery that is Batman and Robin. It's like when the movies make a radical change to a well established idea and the fan community cause an uproar lol

You've managed to capture the design element of Batman Begin/TDK and apply it to Robin really well.

I tell you what, I'd love to see a Batman animated based on those designs... wicked Smile

@Phil: Looking cool isn't what Batman and Robin are about...

@jondoe: Screw the fan community, all they ever really do is whine when something changes. Look at the Ledger incident. Everyone was criticising his casting, and bled even more from their minge when the first image shown up. The result was possibly the best interpretation of the Joker yet.

And no, it isn't destroying the imagery, it's being creatively different. I hate it when fans always say "but that isn't like Batman" So friggin what? Ain't that the whole point? If Batman wasn't open to different interpretations, then why are there so many Elseworlds and Waynes with polar opposite psyches (eg West Batman vs Miller Batman) I didn't see anyone complaining with the Gotham Knight costumes either, despite how mind-numbingly boring the film was.

Although I reckon the picture of Robin does look f00kin great, it isn't really much different from the Batman suit, just a colour change, with trademark Robin designs slapped on.

if batman covered his whole face, i think it could be cool, but why would he restrict his breathing further? have you ever wore a batman mask? dude it's hard to breathe as it is with the nose covered, lol.

as for the robin thing, hey it's dark in gotham, and you're scared off your butt...you're not gonna be trying to see who robin is, you're gonna be running as fast as you can. batman and robin arent the types of heroes who stand out in public like spider-man, they do everything in the shadows...for the most part anyways. and who knows dick grayson anyways? he's a loser for all we care.

remember in JLU when lex and flash switched bodies? lex uncovers the mask, and says to himself, "i have no idea who this is." lol, so really...as long as dick grayson is a nobody, which he probably is, then we're all good.

and robin IS about being cool. while batman might not be, he already is so it doesn't matter.

Batman represents a synergy between "negative" emotions (anger, guilt, obsession) and truely pure, human virtues (self-discipline, self-sacrifice, endurance, wisdom, rightousness); therefore his face is a physical representation of both a man and a demon. To take the human element out of this symbol would require you to take away the characters virtues.

And Robin's mask is the classic "domino" mask, a mask worn by heroes for ages; this fits him as he is a more in line with the classic vision of a hero (optimistic, quick-witted, energetic), and he is less consumed by his alter ego than Batman, therefore less of his face is consumed by his alter ego.

Also, why would you put mandibles on a bat's face?

And finaly, in Phil's defence, you can see he restructured a LOT of Robin's suit in these pictures; notice that the abodominal armor is much less boxy, and that EVERYTHING below his belt is completely redsigned. Also his gauntlets are different, the detailing on his chest and shoulders are redesigned, and even the neckline is a different shape.

Yo, Phil, GREAT WORK, BOIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!

@Phil: I've never worn a proper Batman mask, but c'mon, it's Bruce Wayne! I'm sure he could afford some in-mask breathing apparatus that could double as a voice modifier which in turn would make him seem even more terrifying.

I'm downloading the JLU series at the mo coz I never watched it when it was on (didn't appeal at the time, and neither did the later Batman cartoons) You've got a point with the Lex/Flash thing, but Bruce Wayne's adopted son would be known by the media, as they'd be waiting on him to grow up to be the next Gotham playboy.

Also, I think Dick Grayson is about being cool, not necessarily Robin. Especially in recent comics. Tim Drake only seemed a little cool at times, but it's Grayson who has all the swag, which is why I reckon he's better as Nightwing than Robin.

@Razhwurz: I don't really give a flying fish hook about the classic hero look, I reckon it's campy and pretty damn lame. And as for the mandibles thing, it's something I keep coming back to: FEAR. You've gotta imagine yourself confronted by some guy in a suit and a cape. You wouldn't be scared, you'd probably laugh in their face, or at least snigger to yourself.

And finally, back to Phil's drawing. Don't get me wrong, I do like it, I'm just trying to give a side dish of criticism. I produce music, and I hate it when people just tell me that it's good. I wanna know what could make it better, and have the flaws pointed out. The main flaw with the Robin suit is that it wouldn't fit in with the Nolan universe, which is what the drawing is based on. Yes, he did a little of changes in the suit's pattern design, but everything else is just Tim Drake's Robin suit applied to the Dark Knight suit.

Personally, if I was good at drawing, I'd add the Red Robin mask, lose the 'R', and replace it with the inbred Robin/Nightwing logo from Schumacher's Batman & Robin (BLASPHEMY!!!) The rest of it would work perfectly. And if nobody likes the mask idea, I'd suggest having a hood attached to Robin's cape, but after reading All Star Batman & Robin, it'd probably turn out to be a bad idea.

Still, I really do like the drawings (although they both look like they're built like a brick $hit house), and I look forward to seeing more work from Phil. I might actually look through the old topic for em.

Anyway... moving on from that as we're all entitled to cherish our own interpretations one way or another and give constructive feedback without being rude!

Phil, will you be doing any more character designs, say some villains?

Would be great to see some more of your animated vision expanded buddy...

The sketch looks a lot better, imo. Looks more detailed, although it's probably just because of the shading.

EDIT: No, wait, it's the more realistic posture and body proportion.

Ummm... Yeah. The "Animated" in the thread title should tip you off to the fact that this is a simplified art style.
